I forgo my nerdling ways and passed on LOTR part deux to take in "Gangs of New York" today. Holy sweet Christ on a tricycle, what a beautiful epic of a film. And an OLD-STYLE Hollywood epic. Everything on an actual, honest-to-God set with very little CGI to be seen. The movie is just MASSIVE, in scope, intelligence and spirit.

This has been Scorsese's baby for a good 25 years, and it shows. I haven't seen a movie this big in so long that was so obviously crafted with care and love and where EVERYTHING you saw mattered.

Performances-wise, everyone delivers, even Diaz, though her accent is a little shakey. Daniel Day-Lewis as Bill The Buitcher is a wonder to see, and Liam Neeson's small role is a thing of beauty.

Most importantly, the movie is relevant. It relates to so much that has happened in America in the last century, and even the current events of today. Despite the violence and ugliness, this film is the most wonderfully AMERICAN film to come along in years. See it NOW.

Got to agree - i saw it tonight and was captivated from begining to end. This movie grabs you right after the last perview.
I would have liked a little more character development on some of the characters, but you cant have everything.

did see a wild preview of a movie from Quinten Tarantino that looked totally insane!

I planned to see it last night, but did some shopping and ended up seeing 'Maid In Manhattan.' No complaints here, it was a cute film... but I still have to see 'Gangs.'

I plan to see it!

....When it comes out on DVD.

Until then, I shall watch "The Two Towers" about 20 times in the theater.

Gotta agree with se7en, here. I admit it looks spectacular, seems like it has a good message and is from an interesting time in our history, and if it had come out in the spring, I probably would have seen it opening night.

But trying to steal Two Towers' thunder is just wrong. It'll probably win 46 oscars anyway, so who cares? I'll see it eventually, maybe in the theatres, maybe not...

The book is great coming from New York it is really Kool to walk down in chinatown and see a sign saying this is where five points stood. And how they had Coke addicts and dope fiends and all kinds of shit that kept the gangs going. The kinds of hustles and hustlers. <P>

I had a little difficulty with the running time, mainly because I saw it at 9:30 and left around 1:00. Scorcese definately gave us a lot to chew on:

1) The hypocrisy White American Nationalism

2) The hypocrisy of the Irish People of that Era (Or as I like to call it, the "we are an oppressed and improverished people so let's transcend our misery and hopelessness by going around and killing black people)

3) The hypocrisy of the Democratic Process

4) The hypocrisy of religion (G-d is Love, G-d is Wrath, G-d is Merciful, G-d is Vengeance)

Great fodder for a film analysis class...

Sure I can.

On DVD, eventually.

Until then, I shall support only one film in the theaters- The Two Towers.

But don't feel bad - Gangs will probably win all of the Oscars this year, infuriating me to no end.

That's funny. You said "no end", and so far both of the LOTR films are missing something very important when it comes to making a complete film. What was it again? Oh, right, AN ENDING. Don't give me this "it's a trilogy" nonsense. If you're a real filmmaker (Which Jackson is, so it's especially infuriating), you'd still make each film stand firmly on their own. The first LOTR ended like a bad "ER" cliffhanger. Feh.

I saw it today and I thought this was a fantastic movie. It proves one thing, critics SHOULD NOT open their mouths before they see a movie. I think Scorsese did a great job capturing the tough life for immigrants upon their arrival here in America. And it shows how the social strata has changed over time (for example we see the Irish on bottom, who WILL eventually overcome difficulties and be accepted).

Going with that I say that the Irish are portrayed in a proper light. However it should be noted that many Irish will become distinguished during the Civil War. However the movie does a fantastic job showing the atmosphere of NY right before the draft riots and the "spark" that initiated the riots...

Daniel Day-Lewis is a great essay in the hypocritical way to critisize "Americans" today who are anti-immigration. DiCaprio was good, just the only thing that was annoying was the one minute he had the accent, next he didnt. Cameron Diaz I felt played a great role, and she was a tough lil cookie. I love the way we got to see how the 5 points were back in the 1860's. What a cinemagraphic masterpiece from Scorsese, and I understand why it took him so long to complete. A must see people, go out and see it at your earliest convenience...

where's the sign in chinatown?

there was about 40 minutes or so before the ending that was a bit of a letdown and a drag compared to the rest of the movie, but the actual ending itself was a thing of beauty. talk about a big payoff. one thing's for sure, when all hell breaks loose, A LOT of people take it out on the nearest black guy. back then, anyway.

and i could've sworn leo kept on losing the accent, then getting it back. either way, it was bad.

I loved that movie. Especially since I read the book and had many visuals of the stories and the way things happened at the time. To see it on screen was something else.

Daniel Day Lewis was amazing in it. And Leonardo DiCaprio was pretty good as well. One of my favorite things on the DVD is when Scorcese takes you on a tour of old New York and he gives a little insight into the production of it.
