The battle was a good one, but it sucks that the Ultimate Upset Marathon is comming up soon. It's like you already know the Iron Chef is gonna win, that took alot out of tonight's battle for me. Plus the mayo and fat looked gross on that toast..

Battle Oxtail Highlights:
KORN!!!!!
Dr. Hattori explainig how the challenger was using horse fat from under the mane, which is such a delicacy to eat, even raw. And then saying it is also good for burns.
Korn saying "I like tails and tongues."
The Fortune Teller Judge Hosoki and the Photographer Judge Kanoh verbally jousting over the merits of said horse mane fat.
KORN saying "Hey, I'm a beefy guy, this should be great!"
The use of cod sperm (soft roe) as a flavoring.
and the best line:
KORN: My name might not be digestible, but this Oxtail Stew is going to be fully digested!"
ALLEZ CUISINE!!!

One of my favorite IC episodes is where Kaga got so pissed off because the Iron Chefs were losing, that he vacated Kitchen Stadium for a battle and Hattori had to do the Allez Cuisine and ingredient reveal bits.
Everyone seemed lost w/o the chairman, it was pretty funny.
I heard the non-edited version had funny bits with Kaga in exile...

How do you know the Iron Chef is going to win?? Because New Years Day they are showing an ultimate upsets marathon, which means for 12 hours straight the Iron Chef will be losing. Therefore, they wouldn't have the Iron Chef lose a battle so close to New Years Day if they were planning on running 12 hours of loses in a weeks time...

THAT'S WHAT ROE IS?!?!?!!!!!!
Americans refer to roes usually as the EGGS, from the female. For example, caviar, by definition, is the salted eggs of the sturgeon. Those little crunchy orange eggs on your negiri-sushi roll? That's flying fish eggs, "tobiko" (roe).
But the Japanese call the MILT (sperm) of fish SOFT ROE "shiriko". So soft codfish roe (a delicacy of course) is cod sperm (technically the entire sperm "sac."
On Battle Codfish, one of the Iron Chefs made Soft Roe ice cream...Sperm ice cream anyone? I don't think Ben and Jerry will be calling.
Can you imagine the possibilities though for an ice cream name? "Ben & Jerry's Bukkake Blitz"...filled with lots of "nuts" and a "soft roe swirl."
Incidentally, the milt of the garfish is poisonous.
Also, I have an Uncle Milt and an Aunt Rose and we call them Uncle Milt and Aunt Roe.
Interesting....
Now the real question is, what chicks on the Board swallow their man's soft roe?

New Years Day if they were

I don't think ultimate upsets
necessarily means that the
IC loses... from the
commercial I got the
impression it was battles
where the tasters hated the
food - and there are plenty
of those where the IC won
anyhow...
Plus I'm pretty certain that
they dont plan their
episodes on the basis of
the IC losing or winning, or
which IC it is or anything.
They often have tons of
repeats etc.

I haven't seen the promos, but the idea of watching a day of Iron Chef knowing that the Iron Chef will lose each battle pretty much KILLS all the suspense the show has... and a lot of the appeal the show has for me.

I never stated what I said was
a fact, it's just my own
personal beliefs. I don't
think they would have the IC
lose so close to the ultimate
upsets marathon. And of course
the IC loses all New Years
Day, that's why it's called
ultimate UPSETS.

Sunday was Battle Quail.
My Iron Chef Sakai got his ass kicked by a chef who specializes in game. The guy had game, as the secret ingredient was 50 quails from Bordeaux, France.
Highlights:
Opening with Kaga rapidly chomping on baby lamb chops.
Since this was an early episode, Kaga's remarks after introducing quail included:
"So remember, quail is for the virgin, duck is for the mature woman."
Sakai used the quail heads, frying them whole. The judges seemed to enjoy these the best of his offerings, and Doc Hattori stated that the quail brain is considered the finest part, always offered to the host or honored guest.
The challenger noted that the key to winning the Battle was "proper use of the blood and innards."
Sakai made a quail and dried scallop soup and two other fairly unremarkable dishes; unusual since the special ingredient is common in French cuisine.
The challenger made several excellent dishes, including quail stuffed with wild rice, or as Ota said, "looks like dried grass."
Sakai was a little too cocky. He started with too much prep work, and then rushed it in the end. He also look liked he needed a good shower and shampooing more than usual.
Nevertheless, no quail sperm was used, although Sakai wasted about 50 quail eggs since he didn't finish his egg dish and had to discard the eggs.

Because of The Charmain's urgent suggestions, I've begun watching this show.
Good sweet gravy-covered babies. I'm in love.
It's like a comic book come to life, but more delicious and exotic, and with sexier hair. GLORIOUS.

Best wacky iron chef dish ever...
Morimoto's "Kid's Plate USA".
Even Hattori asked, "What the FUCK were you thinking?"

Tenbat, I didn't see that one. Which episode theme?
Wasn't given to "Little Tommy" the little boy who dressed up as Morimoto, I know that.

I can't even remember what episode or theme ingredient it was. I think the situation was, Morimoto was pressed for time and only had three dishes, so he made a quick one with the theme ingredient (potatoes? something else?) that was really sloppy and half-dashed.
To add insult to injury, I think a cheesey American flag was inserted into the dish, to signify the fact that Morimoto worked in the US at HooHooNobu.
Did some research, it was Battle Bamboo Shoot.... from the IC Website...
Morimoto made faux french fries out of bamboo shoots and put ketchup on them. He served the gratin in the inverted tip of a bamboo shoot. The bamboo shoot "cone" was served in a cup. I guess the image there was supposed to be a ice cream cone. The last item in the trio was a hot dog bun, toasted, with spinach and a ketchup covered noodle and bamboo shoot filling. Personally, I thought the hot dog looked weird though I'm sure the Japanese were making comments about how it was something eaten in America all the time.
Mmmm. Bamboo with ketchup.

Cool.
As long as it was Heinz Ketchup.
I have noticed that both Morimoto and older Japanese IC Michiba both use ketchup regularly in their dishes. Interesting how such a common American ingredient makes it to such bizarre dishes sometimes.
