View Full Version : Beware of cat bites

My cat Lloyd (now known as "Vlad The Impaler") bit my hand Tuesday night (ok I can't blame him; I was giving him a flea bath, and, well, he wanted no part of it). Anyway, he punctured my hand in about 7 places. By the next morning, my hand was swollen, hot, and red. I could barely move it. By afternoon, a red streak was creeping up my arm and I had a 101 fever.

Turns out I got a bad Staph infection. The doctor prescribed about 10-days worth of Cipro (the stuff you take for Anthrax).

So be careful of cat (and even dog) bites!!

my sister one got cat scratch fever. i thought it was just a song title. But no, it's a real disease. it's caused by a fungus that grows on the claws of cats. It was pretty serious. She had to go to the hospital.

Hehe! S'ok! :-)

Oh, I'd LOVE to have a dog, but I live in an apartment. The guy upstairs has a beagle. The dog howls from 5am until he comes home around 8 at night. It's just unfair to keep a dog confined to an apartment all day long.

There's some kind of "toxic shock" you can get from cat bites/scratches that actually attacks your nervous system and destroys your brain.

Just watch "Trainspotting" and see what happens to poor Tommy.

Oh, and cats will almost always devour their dead master's eyes and/or fingers if trapped with the corpse for barely a day. ONE DAY. Nothing more than scummy little rodents.

I rough house with my cat all the time. I swear she thinks she's a dog. My arms are covered with scratches and bites, and so far there's been no side effects, save my recent fascination with sitting on the window sill.

I forgot about Tommy. Cryin' shame!

I'm convinced my cats will eat my face in less than four hours. FOUR HOURS! I always sleep with one eye open!

save my recent fascination with sitting on the window sill.

Me too! And I've been obsessed with those little, furry, toy mice. I bat them around and chew their heads off. I get so upset when I shoot them under 'fridge. ARGH!!!

I made the mistake of petting my friend's pregnant cat a few weeks before she gave birth, and it decided to flip around and sink 2 of it's fangs DEEP into the meaty part of my palm down near the thumb. It got a little infected, and didn't heal for like a week. There's still a faint scar too.

Mine are, REALLY! It's just the flea thing. Like I said, I don't blame him. He was so cool up to this flea bath. They all were!

My cats come when called. They fetch. They are affectionate. They are very cool.

skidmark can back me up. He loves them all.

Mine are too. They have had all their shots.

It was the trauma of the BATH that provoked Lloyd. Otherwise, he is docile, shy, and sweet.

Nevermind.

I volunteer at a local animal shelter with Mrs. Impact and have been bitten many times, once when this little shit Ferral cat got my hand good I got a Staph infection from it, it was the most unpleasent sickness i've dealt with in quite a bit. I think I remeber the doctor mentioning something about the teeth getting to the bone causing the infection, but i was also running a 103 degree fever at the time and didn't know my ass from my elbow. So if anyone does know what causes them i would love to know.

If you people would just give up on cats and get a dog, none of this would happen.

My grandparent's dog ripped my face off with its teeth (fun fun) when I was 2 for no reason.

My cats have never done anything to me unless provoked (baths, snipping their clawsies)

I did get a nasty scratch/bite from my kitten, but its becuase I was holding him while I was walking down the stairs, then I fell down the stairs, and he tried to hold onto me using his claws teeth. also funfun.

IT's all Staph McMahon's fault.Moe, you're slipping.

Fuzzy, just giving our cat a bath was a three person operation. One on the front legs, one on the back, and one to scrub. Usually my father and I would hold the cat while my mother scrubbed her.

I'm sure you know how hard it is to hold onto a soapy cat while laughing at all the gutteral sounds they make. Our cat would always resort to the sorrowful eyes, and once she found that didn't work, she'd start growling and howling.

Oh! I know it! Lloyd was literally climbing the tile walls of the bathtub. I swear, my neighbors must think I'm torturing my cats!

I actually didn't use flea bath. I used Head and Shoulders shampoo. A vet told me Head and Shoulders kills fleas. I thought it would be better for the cats and less irritating on their skin. It makes their coats silky and they smell purty, too.

Nope, it was definitely the bacteria in Lloyd's mouth that gave me the infection. He punctured my hand over 7 times and the wounds were quite deep.

AngryMissy, Sorry to hear about it!

Fuzzy,

Could the "flea" shampoo you were using have anything to do with it?
I remember times when the cats would scratch my hand and the scratches would swell for a short while... other times the scratches wouldn't swell...
Makes you wonder what germs are there when the swelling does occur...

I got a staph infection that started in the foot and i waited til the red traveled half way up to the knee before getting treated(thought it may go away) Man did it hurt, especially when i first stood up...

My mom is a groomer and she holds the cats scruff on the back of the neck while keeping the cats chest on the floor of the tub. Sometimes if they are wild she bathes them inside the cat carrier. I don't think it's good to use human shampoo on pets because of the ph difference.
