View Full Version : One Less Drunk on the Road
"A man convicted 14 times of drunken driving in New Jersey - and still facing another three DWI charges - was sentenced yesterday to 10 years in prison for the one offense that ended in a crash with injuries."
"Mr. DeSantis has perhaps one of the worst driving records...that anyone has come across," Assistant Morris County Prosecutor Joseph D'Onofrio Jr. said. "Mr. DeSantis has been convicted so many times that is almost makes it meaningless."
(Star Ledger)
The court finally took this guy's driver's license away for good - but only after 17 convictions.

Eh, he'll probably still drive, even without a license and insurance.

This guy's story was almost as tragic as the story I read (I think about 1-2 years ago) of a woman who wrote a book about "how alcoholics can still moderately drink". This same lady (within a year I believe of writing the book) ended up killing somebody while drunk driving.

Latin Joker: Are you serious about this?
By the way, I only mentioned the story because of a personal tragedy within my own family regarding drunk driving.

Are you sure? I thought the woman who wrote that book was British.

Thanks Alice Fuzzybutt. He is alive and that is what we are most thankful for, but probably will be disabled for the rest of his life.

Coco - Such a tragedy!
Most people don't have to look outside their circle of aquaintances and family to find someone who was killed or badly hurt as the result of alcohol.
It's mind boggling how dangerous alcohol is, even compared with "illegal" drugs.
It's also outrageous that he had 14 drunk driving CONVICTIONS and another 3 DWI charges and was not locked up. He was driving around like a loaded gun. Hurting someone physically was as inevitable as the emotional wreck his drinking caused the people close to him.

The most DUIs I saw when I went to meetings for two years in California was 7. The guy lost his license after the first one and got the rest on a suspended licence. He started spending time in jail after the 4th, got 5 years for the 7th, and had been sober for two years when I met him. He never hurt anyone to get the jail time, just DUIs. I'd say Jersey needs to tighten its laws and get recovery programs going in jail and for first-time DUIs. Catch up with the rest on the world.
I got one DUI and was sent to DUI classes for four months. When I started driving drunk again 6 months later, I knew I needed help and went back to the same place to do meetings. I've been sober six years now, and I credit the judge for sending me to the classes.
