Jeff George was/is a brilliantly talented quarterback who never reached his potential due to a combination of ego and lack of industriousness. He thought he could get by on talent alone, rather than by working hard to memorize playbooks and reading defenses. I don't think he was overrated, he just under-performed. To be overrated is to be thought of as better than you actually are. I never heard people talk about Jeff George as a quarterback who was great, just a greatly talented Q.B. who was pretty much a prick and non-team player.
Ryan Leaf was overrated coming out of the draft. After that, another head case. But I never heard anyone rate him highly as an NFL player.
Eric Crouch, like all Nebraska QBs, came out of the Husker Option Offense. As a college Q.B., he was great. Even he realized that he would not make it as a pro Q.B. and he was drafted low as a potential wide receiver.
Other Husker QBs that come to mind are Tommy Frasier and Scott Frost, who played safety for the Jets for a while.
The decision to be a Nebraska Q.B. is to be a superstar during college, get laid a lot, and then land a sinecure job back in Nebraska once you never make it in the NFL.
Husker running backs, or linemen, that's another story.
GO BLACKSHIRTS!!!
