This is a great community and I need your help. Any Anime fans out there?
I like to think of myself as a person who knows a little bit about a lot of things. But I know absolutely nothing about Anime aside from that it is a form of Japanese animation and it's big and getting bigger. Like I watched Speed Racer as a kid and always wondered why everyone's eyes were so large. And every now and then I see a post or chat room called "Sailor Moon" and wonder what the heck that is.
I own an extensive DVD collection and cover almost all genres. But I've never seen an Anime movie. I'd like someone's advice on an "intro" type movie to buy or rent to see what everyone's talking about. I did a little research on the web, and there are apparently different types. From what I've read and from the types of non-animated movies I like, I think I'd be more interested in the violent/sexual (movies like Reservoir Dogs, Se7en, or Crash kind of violent not perverted) kind than one like the Powderpuff? Girls.
Can anyone recommend a few titles? A good web site to buy them?
Peace,
CK1

Cinematically, Akira broke ground in america. I think you have to watch it, but I don't care for it.
Ghost in the Shell and Ninja Scroll are two more "compulsary" movies. Both are good.
For series based anime, there's the obvious Robotech, the compelling Cowboy Bebop (cowboy bounty hunters in space), and the epic Rurouni Kenshin, Wandering Samurai.
We've had previous threads about anime before. You can always check those.

Bubblegum Crisis is really good, but really dated. (I love how painfully 80's it is).
Bubblegum Crisis 2040 is a good retelling, but spends too much time on the Romero-esque robot/zombies story.

Knocking "Akira" is absurd. It's hardly the best, but like I was saying, it's a good place to start. The movies I listed are usually a good place for first-timers to start because they're the most "Westernized"...if they like them, they can only move on up to the best stuff.

Everything pales in comparison to "Cowboy Bebop". 25 episodes and one movie. Nothing more is needed. Perfection.

I still don't understand Akira, and perhaps I never will. I do enjoy it though.
My personal favorite is Princess Monanoke. so brilliant, it makes hollywood weep.

How can you talk about anime and not mention eva, the most compelling anime series ever, followed closely by Cowboy bebop.
Akira is a must see, it's just good, even if you aren't an anime fan.
Princess mononoke is great but you have to like anime to truely be drawn in to the truely japanese based plot.

I just placed my online order. Based on responses, I chose Ghost in the Shell and Angel of Darkness. I would guess that covers both ends of the spectrum and speculum.

'Lo all, newbie on board who may have a little to contribute.
Yor looking for a few movies to introduce you into the world of anime? I've seen mentioned and slammed a few times, it always seems that the people who fancy themselve elite viewers of anime always knock this movie, with good reason you cannot condence such a huge story into a two hour movie. Then you have the relatively new viewers who always point to this movie, I think because the animation is so sweet. Just had to say something about that.
Now for some suggestions
[b]Spriggan: Incredible animation, action packed, interesting story. Guns, guns, guns.
Ranma 1/2 hilarity abounds, what's not to laugh at a guys who turn into a girl when he gets douced with water. Be for warned this is a long television series. But luckily the are OVA's
.hack Hmmmm...Another series set in an Everquest like world (Online) Very, very good story. Half the fun of this one is figuring out who and what the players are. Good story, good action, fun.
Giant Robo Hell it's Giant Robo 'Nuff said
Neo Genisis Evangelion Big robots, teen angst, deep confusing story, Rei Ayami
There is so much good anime out right now you could prety much throw a rock and hit something good. My advice to you is to d/l something from Kazaa and watch that then decide if you want to get some of the rediculously overpriced anime that is on the market.
