I've seen it in my profile here and other places. Just want to know if I have one and don't know what it is, or if I don't have one.

Please before the insults start flying, won't SOMEONE leave the real answer?

ICQ was the original popular instant messenger, but it was surpassed by AIM because of the large AOL user base

ICQ was horrible. You were issued a number as a user id and forced to remember that number and the number of others. FUCKING pain in the ass.

I hope it dies a slow, painful death. I had so many numbers in my head that it gave me a beautiful mind and I conceptualized a new economic model that revolutionized our understanding of the world and changed mathematics forever.

I hate ICQ, but a few friends of mine that I have to chat with use it and don't have AIM.

Fuckers!

It's awful, mainly because if you have a PC it seems to go out of its way to lock up your system. I just keep it because most of my friends overseas use only that or some other foreign equivalent...

Ok, so in Chat world, ICQ is kinda like Esperonto I guess. An international messaging system that was supposed to bring people together, but just ended up becoming useless.

So what was it like? I mean, what kind of software would you have to download? Is if still available?

And if it SUCKS, why is it still part of our profiles? Or am I supposed to put my AOL or yahoo messenger ID in there instead of this rediculous number??

The answers you left yeilded even more questions.

It was actually pretty simple, Jeff is probably thinking back to the very earliest days of the program...by the time I signed on for it in '96, you could search for people by their real names or screennames, not just by the identifying "ICQ number" they gave you. Basically you switched the program on, and a list like your AOL Buddy List docked somewhere along your toolbar.

The biggest problems seem to always come up when the thing tried to go idle. It has like half a dozen different types of idle settings, and even if you select that you want it to NEVER go idle, it seems to anyways. Then when you try to "awaken" the program, it stalls, freezes everything up, and you're screwed.

It especially hates running at the same times as older versions of AOL IM. It had a new edition come out in the last year, but each time it's upgraded, new bugs seem to arise since it tries to be SO "universal".

It's still very popular, and I think they have over a hundred million registered users at this point. A lot of people swear by it and refuse to use other messanger services, so it's sometimes the only way to keep in contact with someone that way, hence why it shows up on the board.

AOL "borrowed" a lot of functions for IM that ICQ had first. It has a massive address book, chat functions, e-mail functions, web page hosts, online pagers, blah-blah-blaaaaaaaaah...

Moe there are a number of client programs like AIM but which allow you to communicate with MSN Mess, AIM, ICQ just using the one program.

I use a program called Fire for the Mac and it keeps all my chat addresses using one program.

I am sure there are similar programs for the PC which if memory serves you are using check out www.tucows.com and search for "chat, IM AIM etc"

ICQ is the "elder statesman" of the chat protocol world.

You can get it at ICQ.com, it's just like any messenger. Sure every one has a number, but on the buddie list you can put any name you want on it.

I have ICQ Lite since I only use it to chat with a couple people and don't need all the extra features.

I never had any problem with ICQ, but I just never bothered to installed it on this computer. And after they started putting stupid adds in the message windows I already stoped using it.
