Dognapped Chihuahuas Mistaken for Pit Bulls
Mon Dec 9,10:11 AM ET Add Oddly Enough - Reuters to My Yahoo!

IRVINE, Calif. (Reuters) - They thought they had stolen vicious pit bulls but instead they wound up with purse-sized Chihuahuas known for their timidity.

Mehrad Sepanjasa, 19, Ariyo MacKay, 18, and Kamyar Katouzian, 24, were arrested on Wednesday for allegedly stealing the puppies from an animal shelter in this Southern California city a couple of days earlier.

The men were caught after bringing the dogs, which had ID microchips implanted under their skin, to an animal clinic in a PetSmart pet supply store for an examination and vaccinations.

Lisa Morgenthaler, the store's director, said she recognized the puppies and the suspects from their descriptions on a flyer she received from the animal shelter.

The store manager said she sensed that the pups were victims of a severe case of mistaken identity. "They asked me, 'What is this?'" Morgenthaler said. "I told them it looked like a Chihuahua mix. They said, 'No way, it's a pit bull.' They didn't believe me. They wanted to ask the veterinarian."

When the men brought the puppies back to the clinic for an exam and shots two days later, Morgenthaler was prepared.

"We said we were going to take them into the back to cut their nails and take their temperatures, and we called the police," she said. "It was pretty scary."

During the examination, the men repeatedly asked the veterinary staff what breed the puppies were, and again insisted that they were not of the diminutive Mexican breed.

"They were pretty perturbed that the puppies they stole were not pit bulls," Morgenthaler said.

I'm so confused.

a) Why would it be considered stealing if it was a shelter? Don't they want to find homes for the dogs?

b) Why would you put a chip in a dog?

c) Why would you steal the dog instead of trying to adopt it for free?

d) Why did they take the dogs to the vet? AND, how did they mistake them for pits?

e) What the fuck could be so scary about waiting in your office while the police pick up alleged dog thieves?

My head hurts.

This is just my own opinion on this stuff, as I just quoted what I saw in the papers on this story.

I have a friend of mine who is very involved in an animal shelter. She has told me that they usually do background checks on anyone who wants to adopt. They normally don't want these dogs to be caught in a cycle of constantly being picked up and put back in the shelter. It seems that these guys obviously did steal them for whatever the reason (maybe it was the background check) as the shelter put fliers up on the dogs.

Shelters normally put chips in dogs nowadays so if lost, they can be easily traced back to the owners.

I would imagine these guys probably intended on keeping the dogs for their own purposes and normally you get the dog vaccinated otherwise you will probably end up with a very sick dog on your hands.

It seems that the workers at the shelter were the ones who were scared as it looked as if they were getting the police involved.

They mistook them for pits because they were stupid.

It is common to put identification chips in show dogs that are worth a lot of money. Dog owners also put identification chips in dogs in case they run away, or are stolen. I didn't know that it was common practice for shelters to put chips in the dogs, as its expensive and most shelters are always in need of funds to support the animals.

b) the chip is for tracking, but you know it's part of a big government conspiracy to track us all and really become big brother

c)i just found out they actually do background checks at shelters, and they might have had a record of fighting pit bulls, but since they couldn't tell, probably not. dumbasses

Wow, those guys are awesome.
How about doing some homework first, assholes.

they probably stole for someone else (fighting dog breeders) to make some quick cash. unfortunaly for them they probably took the job having no knowledge of dogs.

like everyone else has said the ID chips are to store medical and ownership info on the doggies.

Lots of animals in shelters are chipped now. The chip is about the size of the point of a pencil, and work like an EZpass transponder. The vet/shelter worker uses a scanner and gets an ID from the chip, and the computer finds the record on the animal from some sort of database. The chip is usually inserted between the shoulder blades of the animal.

Most shelters take donations towards running the shelter (supplies, bills, etc) and separate funds for chipping. If someone would like their pet chipped, they have to pay, but ones that come into the shelter as strays/unwanted may or may not be chipped, depending on funds and policy of the shelter.

As for why they stole the dogs, you'd have to ask them. I'd guess that since pit bulls are a "hot" breed for using in dog fights or as protectors, they were most likely stolen for that purpose.

Chihuahuas are usually more wirey or "boney" than a pit bull pup. These idiots probably never saw a pit bull pup before. I get a kick out of how they tried to validate their "work" by insisting that the dogs were pit bulls, even though the vet told them otherwise.
