View Full Version : Liquor Laws

Just got from a week in South Carolina.

When you go to a bar there, all the bottles are those little airplane mini bottles! No free pour. If you want a Long Island Iced Tea, you need to buy 5 mini bottles and they make it out of that. It was the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen, I thought I was still on the airplane. Also last call at the bar was 2AM, but some bars will serve beer (which thankfully comes in normal bottles) until 2:45.

I'm from NY. I can deal with not being able to buy beer between 9-12 AM on Sunday. Last call in NY? Right. There is no last call, only a law that says a bar has no be closed for at least 2 hours. So you can leave one bar at 4AM and go to another that opens (or is open) at 4AM.

What other ridiculous State liquor laws (or cool ones) do you know of? For example, when I was in NJ I had to buy liquor bottles and six packs in a bar! When I was in Vienna, Austria, they serve beer and wine at McDonalds! In Minnesota last call at bars is 1AM. They will serve you a beer at 12:58AM, but it must be finished or down on the bar at 1AM or you're fucked. And if the bar isn't empty by 1:15AM the bar is closed down by the liquor authorities. That means hundreds of drunks spilling out on the street at the same time. STOOOPID. When I was in Texas last, you could drink and drive with an open container, as long as you weren't intoxicated (this was a while ago). And New Orleans, almost everything goes (except public urination which they handle like a capital crime)

So let's brag (or tool) on liquor laws.

This isn't a liquor law per se, but at the college I go to You are not allowed to bring in a 30 pack, but you are allowed to bring in as many 24 packs as you want, provided you bring them in one at a time. Therefore, you could theoretically wander in with 5 cases as long as you walked them in one at a time. Bizarre.

Bob, is this a state law or college rule. When I was in college, my fraternity house had a 6 keg refrigerated kegolater. Kegs are now banned, so when the boys have a party they buy like 100 30 packs of Natty Light. It's ridiculous....

New Jersey is awful. I've lived here for far too long.

New Hampshire doesn't have State or Local Taxes. To supplement the State Budget, it has State Liquor Stores that are the size of BJ/Coscos.

In Spain (where I come from) alcohol laws are very laxed.

-Legal drinking age: 16 years of age.

-Drink&Drive: As long as you are not intoxicated (0.8) you are allowed to drink while you drive.

-Drinking Hours: There is no such concept... For example Many people go to a cafe for breakfast and have a "Carajillo" (expresso with a splash of cognac) at 8 in the morning before going to work...

-Bar Closing Hours: I think it goes by region but I never seen a bar close before 2am.

-Places where drinking is not allowed: Again, there is no such concept. You can buy alcohol at a movie theater, Mc Donalds, any supermarket. When I started college there you could buy beer at the caffeteria with your luch. And its perfectly OK for you to go to a bar and have a beer or two (NOT get hammered but have a beer or two) during your breaks at work.

I miss all that...

When I first came to the states (11 years ago) I was 2 months shy of being 21, and when I went to a bar and they wouldnt serve me alcohol I thought they were fucking with me!!! I'had never heard such a stupid thing...

Anyway,

Peace & Hugs,

In Va we have some weird rules.

We only have ABC store (state run liquor stores) open Monday through Saturday until 9pm.
You can buy beer and wine almost anyway grocery stores, drug stores, and even gas stations. You have to purchase beer and wine before 12 midnight everynight of the week. 7-11's put locks on the refridgerators. 11:30pm every makes that last minute beer run.

I think they start selling beer sometime between 6am-8am not sure exact time.

Most bars have last call around 1am and you have to be out around 2am.

MD they have drive through liquor stores that are open very late. TICK TOCK in College park used to be open 24 hours.

Thank you Ron and Fez for finally being live in DC again.
Philly is the next market for the boys. Wake up WYSP...

NJ's not so bad.

When I went to Vestal, NY a couple years back, we stopped in a convenience store around 10pm and were told they couldn't sell us beer. The local bar (note: the only bar in the town we stayed in near Vestal) was closed for the night. And you couldn't purchase alcohol on Sunday at all, although I believe you can purchase beer.

In Indianapolis, similar rules to NJ, but they seem to roll up the streets of that town around 6:30pm. I couldn't get into a drugstore to get aspirin at 7pm! Thank God the hotel bar was open until 1am.

I went to Charlotte this past summer, and they have ABC stores like was mentioned above. We couldn't find a single ABC/"liquor" store in downtown Charlotte listed in the phone book. We had to drive about 10-15 miles out of the city to pick up a bottle of JD Green for a friend of ours.

Just got back from Maryland. Another place that it seems you can't buy liquor on Sundays. But from what I was told by a native, it depends on the county you're in.

My firm has sent me to Minnesota a few times. That state forbids the sale of alcohol after 12:30. The first time I went out there, me and my coworkers were still on NY time. So, we'd get to a bar at about 11 and were shocked when last call was announced an hour later!

The worst part is that the mini-bars in the hotel lock from a central location! So, if you're going out and want a drink when you get back, you need to either empty the mini-bar or prop the door open! Very annoying.

In Connectucut, they stop selling beer in grocery stores at I think 8PM. After that, you go into a Supermarket, and not only can't you buy beer, but the beer aisle is entirely covered by a curtain! You can wanlk don't the aisle, but no peeking! That's pretty random.

And in Massachusetts when I went to school, if you were 21+ and had an out of state ID, even a driver's license, that didn't necessarily mean could could drink. Many places refused out of state licenses and instead you had to go to DMV and get a MA ID Card. People got them cause you never knew when some prick doorman/womyn or bartender would refuse your ID.

I forgot about this one:

A friend of mine went to Salt Lake City a few years ago, and in order to drink there, you HAVE TO BE A MEMBER OF THE CLUB! They do not have "bars" they have "clubs", and you have to join. I've heard that for people who are only going to be there for a short time, it's not too expensive, but you have to join the actual club, and then you can drink. And the membership is only good at that particular club!
