View Full Version : Gay Marriage...

I just finished The Trouble With Normal, a book by a gay man who argues against gay marriage. Basically, he believes that the marriage movement is selling out on past critiques of straight society offered up by previous generations of gay activists.

I'm curious what everyone's opinion is of gay marriage. Should it be legal or not? Why?

Yes. I see know reason why
it shouldn't be.

Whether marriage is an
'institution' that has a
'purpose' is a different
matter altogether.

Marriage is viewed legally not as a union among people in love, but an economic partnership. This partnership confers certain privilleges, that have nothing to do with the institution of marriage. Allowing some people to get married and not others is just racisism and bias. Not too long ago, Trent Lott went to back for a Catholic college that prohibited interacial marriages. Prohibiting gay marriages is just as reprehensible.

Regarding love, there are many gay couples as much or more in love with each other than married couples.

I forget which comedian said about this topic: "I'm for gay marriages. Why shouldn't they be as miserable as the rest of us?"

There are only benefits to the legalization and recognition of gay marriage.

1. Health insurance benefits

2. Survivor's benefits (like social security)

3. Ability to make medical decisions for their partner.

4. Providing social recognition for gays. It would help reduce anti-gay bias.

tax breaks and benefits
afforded to a straight married
couple.

Tax breaks? Are you kidding?
For married couples, the tax
code is based on there being
one high income earning spouse
and one stay at home or low
earning spouse. If both
spouses work full time jobs
and make a decent wage, the
tax rate is riduculously high,
that's why its called the
marriage penalty.

I'm for gay marriage. I know
gay couples who have more
committed, strong
relationships than some of my
married straight

I'm all for it, as long as they don't have kids of their own.

If they choose adoption or artificial insemination that's ok though.

I plan to marry a gay man.

I don't know why...but I think that's the cutest thing I have ever heard.

Anyway, I am for gay marriages, too. My brother is gay and there is no way in the world that I would miss the most important day of his life. I don't care who loves...I just care about what he loves. Whether it's his lover's laugh, sense of humor, sensitivity or just plain everything!....I don't care if it's a male or female. Just as long as he's happy.

SILERA- i'd turn gay for
you... wait ... shit.

and gay marriage is
working for jersey rich and
GVAC, so why not all the
time?

I mean people are people.
if we cannot descriminate
in the work place, which is
where you pay taxes, why
can we discriminate based
on who you want to file your
tax return with? thats all
marriage really is. almost
all the other rights of
marriage can be
established through mutual
agreement (life insuarance
payments, etc etc)

How would THAT work? LOL

As for the so - called Tax-Breaks - I say "HA!". I almost got married and let me tell you there was very little in the way of perks financially.

Gay people want to get married for the SAME reasons that straight people do. Because they love someone so much that they want to be in a legal and sacred union with them. There is NO difference - straight or gay.

Love is Love. PERIOD.

"I'm for gay marriages. Why shouldn't they be as miserable as the rest of us?"
I don't know if we are thinking of the same thing, but Chris Rock said "Gays can't get married and they can't join the military, who has got it better than that?"

I support state recognition of gay marriage. I can't think of a more flagrant violation of the Constitution than to deny 2 people the right to marry.

There is, however, the marriage tax. That might be a deterent for gays who would otherwise like to marry.
