OK. Some of you may or may not know (or may not care) that I work for the MTA. I honestly don't know if there will be a strike or not. Personally, I hope not. But we want a fair contract. Our time has come. So, go ahead and vent on me......

i pay good money on those monthly metrocards damn it. how much more money to you need to operate a train that always stops in between stations and there's always some sort of track repair which delays you to getting places.

the only good coming from this is that i have a legitimate reason not to go work.

I am very distressed about this strike. My boyfriend lives in the city, and I am on the island. He doesn't drive at all since he has lived there all of his life. I am terrified of driving in New York City, and there have been rules set up:
WEEDAYS: carpool of 4 people
WEEKENDS: carpool of 2 people

Am I supposed to have my dad drop me off at his apartment? Oh wait, then he can't drive home without a second person in the car.

I am supposed to be staying at his house during my Christmas break. I was supposed to be there with his family on Christmas Eve. This STRIKE had better not last very long, or I will be so sad.

I just took a look at Mayor Loonberg's "Plan."

He's fucking insane.

How do you find 4 people that are going your way everytime you want to go somewhere?

I hate people in general.

I avoid the trains to stay away from people.

Why would I let strangers in my car???? It is my safe haven. It is my world on wheels.

That distance between me and the masses keeps me from going completely insane.

Bloomberg is nuts if he thinks
I'm letting strangers into my
car, or better yet, getting
into strangers' cars!
Seriously though, I'm really
worried about a friend of mine
who is blind. She is really
independent and the city bus
is her lifeline. She's so
freaked out. She is totally
screwed.

I think 24 percent raise over
3 years is ridiculous. Where I
work no one has gotten a raise
since 2000 and won't get one
until 2004, if we even still
have jobs then. And its not
like there are alot of jobs
right now so I can't even tell
them to fuck themselves and
quit. My husband's job is only
giving them a 1 percent raise
this year.

Times are tough and all of us
are paying the price.

Bloomberg's plan is totally nuts. And, now that the cabbies are claiming that they'll stop working too as a gesture of solidarity, things could get really hairy.

SuperClerk - so, what happens if you strike and Bloomberg gets his way and fines you $25,000 per day?

In my heart, I don't think it will come to that. This is New York friggin' City. There is no way that a strike can happen. I think (hope) it will come down to the wire again. I know that 24% is high, but we gotta demand high and work our way down. MTA wants to cut our wages, which is ridiculous. I have a hunch that it will all work out in the end.

Why should jobs that require no formal education get paid so much? I say if they strike, fire the bunch and hire non union people and just laugh and laugh at the now unemployed transit workers tying to get another job.

Isnt it illegal for you guys to strike. I think that you can technically be arrested for this. And i believe bush could also envoke the Taft-Hartley Act (i think this is it) which forces workers on strike or who have voted for a strike to be at work for 90 days while an independent arbitrator goes over everything to give a decsision.

My job did cut my salary this year, but next week, I don't know if I'll even be able to get there. And there days I usually have to drive into the city, but won't be able to because I can't go searching for 3 other people to cross the bridge with me, due to the strange hours I go in and out on the days I drive in.

I'm just glad I don't work as far downtown as I used to.

I'm curious, the last strike was in 1980, does that mean that you've had the same contract since then? Or when was the last time transit workers got an increase? it must've been years ago. I can't imagine working for that long and not even receiving a cost of living raise. they are asking for a 6% increase per year for 3 years, down from 8%. that means that if a transit worker was making 20,000, they would now be making 21,200. These are not outrageous requests. And how can the MTA not have any money? they keep raising the price of fares.

If they choose to strike, I support them, as everyone who earns a buck from their own sweat should instead of grumbling about how you are inconvenienced. Those with power will forever push around those without, as long as the ones who watch condemn the ones who act.

Our last contract ended in December 1999.

Well, that's a relief. No strike. (So far)

I still think asking for a 24% raise is too high. SC, you admitted that's a bit steep, but the MTA workers intervied on 1010wins think it's perfectly reasonable.

what i realy want to know is, where's the surplus the MTA had when the started the metrocard program a few years back.?
