What the fuck? Was he drunk? I figured a 100th birthday would be a rager, but come on...you're a U.S. senator, for God's sake...did you think nobody would be paying attention? Thurmond's '48 platform was an abomination. We're not stupid, Trent.

I saw a clip of this on the news last night and all I could think was "Someone check his pulse" because he looks like he has been dead for a while.

Uh Oh, the Dixiecrats are back. When Strom ran for President Stalin was still in power, China was not a Communist nation, and our current President was still in diapers.

it is being blown out of proportion...
he apologized and everyone should move on...
there has already been a little damage done and I'm sure he has learned a lesson. I'm a Democrat but not hardcore and I hate to see this situation being used for Political gain...

Yeah, this thing is just being blown out of proportion. It's just a bunch of Democrats turning nothing into something.

Democrats really are pathetic.
When in doubt, play the race card.

I had a short meeting in a Senate office on the same floor as Strom Thurmond's office. I rounded the corner to the meeting and saw ol' Strom coming out of his office with two of his staffers holding him up while he "walked". I passed the man and took a good look and he was like a mummy. His eyes were like a really old dog's eyes and he had no idea what was going on around him. I spent about 20 minutes in the office and when I came out Strom had just made it to the elevator about 40 feet from his office.
More Strom Facts:
-Strom Thurmond was born on Dec. 5, 1902
On that day:
-Thomas Edison took the witness stand to defend his company's right to sell his patented phonograph.
-The Senate Committee of Territories began negotiating a bill to add the state of Oklahoma to the Union.
Also in 1902...
-Theodore Roosevelt was president.
-Edward VII was King of England.
-An Acme Royal Top buggy sold for $54.90.

It was a joke goddammit!
HA HA HA. Score one for the Democrats!!! We can get a good 3 or 4 months out of this bad boy.

Well, he was technically a Democrat when he was running for Prez.
A Dixiecrat, granted, but still...
And it's not blown out of proportion. Strom's campaign was one based on a foundation of segregation. It was the crux of his presidential push. What other "problems" would we have avoided by electing this withered dick into the highest office in the land?

Yeah, Strom gets to stay up past 5pm and drink strained birthday cake. Kennedy gets shot, but this asshole lives to be 100.

Lott is a bigot. He made an identical comment about 22 years ago (at Strom's 80th birthday party in fact).
You think he just hates blacks? He hates everyone who is not him.
Who cares if he's a "democrat" or "republican"? He's a lousy human being.

This one's for Jeff..."stupid is as stupid does." Now all we need is for Trent to 'fess up that he's "not a smart maaan", and everything will be peachy.

Should the republicans
remove lott from his
position as senate leader?
No. Why? Because that is,
underneath it all, the
reason why he is their
leader in the senate. He
represents that wing of their
political party. He was
about 3rd place in the party,
and that is where you place
someone who represents
your hardcore base, as
opposed to the more
moderate portion of the
party. If you think he is the
only one in that party that
had these deep down
feelings before this
incident, you are only
fooling yourself.
Lott is a politician through and through, and will say and do almost anything to gain what he perceives as "popularity."
I've disliked him for years, and this latest incident only further deepens my disgust for him.

Lott will never recover from this incident & needs to go as majority leader. He was horrible before this comment and is unacceptable now.
Lott has played right into the hands people eager to paint the Republican Party's Southern ascendancy as nothing more than old-fashioned bigotry.
The one irony here the 1964 Civil Rights Act would have been impossible without Republican leadership. Republicans in both the House & Senate supported the measure far more than Democrats. Only six Republican senators voted against the act, compared with 21 Democrats - a personal victory for Everett Dirksen, then Senate Minority leader.
Shut up brain or I'll stab you with a Q-Tip.

Those were the last of the remaining Dixiecrats, for the most part...though the biggest pusher of civil rights, at least presidential, was Lyndon Johnson, so go figure...remember, Strom was technically a "Democrat" when he ran in '48...

Oh, come on, that's insulting to Republicans and conservatives. If the "hardcore" base is really pro-segregationist like him, then they need to go right out the door with him.
