Just heard a Spirit airlines commercial and at the end, the guy says "9-11 security fee of (some amount) applies". This has been bothering me for awhile. Cant they come up with a better term? Even if for their own good, I mean my God theyre selling airplane rides, ,then REMINDING people what can happen by saying "9-11". But the reason i post this is because I dont think that day/event should be referred to unless actually talking about the event. It feels like maybe one step towards commercializing the term. Cant they call it a Homeland Security fee???

I heard the same thing, but forgot to bring it up... and im wondering what it means. Is it like "We need money if this plane crashes and even if it doesnt we still have your money"?

and im wondering what it means.it means when people started demanding more security in the airports they implemented this fee. it's a couple bucks per leg i think, but yes, they could just call it a security fee, or just call it nothing at all and just add it to the price of the ticket.

They do it to shut people up. For every one of us who realize what a fee like this is for, you'll get a thousand jackasses packing their phone lines and flooding them with letters demanding to know what the "mysterious, hidden charge" is.

I agree with your & the other posters' point, but I think the commercialization/ commoditization of the term and event is inevitable and has already begun. I think referring to it as the 9/11 security fee will keep people from bitching about it, which is probably what the airlines want. <P>

I couldn't agree more! Just make it "the price"! If you think it's too high, don't buy. The charge, if I remember correctly, is $2.50. Perhaps the airlines can screen their employees in Newark to see if they are actually citizens from now on. If they need extra money to protect their own fleet now, what the hell was the security allocation of funds going towards before, rubber band shock insurance. Shouldn't the very thing there using to raise prices be what they were protecting from in the first place. It isn't like the terrorists used some new technically advanced equipment to fool the system of illegal aliens at the security check points. It's called another excuse to raise prices, and were only aware of it due to their stupidity.

What really pisses me off, is that the airlines had insurance that should cover their losses, on top of that the federal government gave the airlines $900+ million dollars to "help" the industry, every f'ing time you get into a plane you have to pay $3.50 "9-11" fee, AND STILL THEY ARE LAYING PEOPLE OFF, CUTTING EMPLOYEES SALARIES AND GOING FUCKING BANKRUPT!!!

How the fuck does that work???

And dont give me the "people dont fly as much as they used to" bull crap, because I fly quite a lot, and planes are always packed.

Anyway, Peace & Hugs

You're confusing two issues.
the airlines don't collect the fee, so it has nothing with them laying people off. the fee, which is officialy known as "The Transportation Security Fee" not the 9-11 fee, is collected by the TSA.

so it does have another name, but people just keep using the 9-11 name.

thats my point. If it has another name, thats what should be used.
