MAN, I hate static eletric shocks!

Just today, I was getting out of my work truck and got shocked through my 2 jackets and RIGHT on my nippy nip!! Now it's already cold and my nips are sensitive!!!! I screeched like a women when it happened!

What is it about the cold weather that causes this?!

Is it something I'm wearing? I have a jacket with a wool lining, could that be it?

Everytime i touch something i shock the shit out of it. Sometimes it goes through my keys and causes sparks.

What can I do to ground myself to stop this from happening?

When I was a kid, my father had slippers that would allow him to shock us everytime. He would wake us up for school with a shock to the face. It's not a fun way to wake up let me tell ya!

Ya, so how can I stop it? What causes it? Why does it only happen in cold weather?

I said my dad used to have slippers that would allow him to shock us EVERY time he touched us.

Well me and my brothers would fight for the slippers and shock each other all day.

We would sneek around the house trying to shock each other by suprise. lol

I have been getting them this week too!! bad!! At work, just to open my filing cabinet I kick it, then lean my ass into it, then my shoulder and then I can open it with my hands without a shock.

I've been getting them real bad this week too. This morning, I took off my fleece and decided I had to pee. I got up and walked near a metal pipe and the hairs on my arm started standing up. I knew the second I touched anything...ZZZZZZAAAPP!! So I tried to touch a coworker. :)

Here goes nothing...

Static Electricity is indeed worse in cold or low humidity weather, with less humidity the arc of electricity has less dense air to move through, allowing a small charge to arc through the air.

Everytime i touch something i shock the shit out of it.

If you're wearing wool or similar clothing you are pushing your luck. Vinyl jackets dissipate static well, as does leather, polyester and most synthetic textiles.

Cars can become paricularly sensative to picking up static charges as they drive, solving this can be a simple as adding Heavy rubber grounding straps to the undercarraige of the vehicle or being sure that your tires are properly inflated, the basic theory being that the more rubber that hits the ground, the most static being dissipated out to ground. It's also feasible that if you gave yourself more time before you exited the vehicle you would give the charge a chance to dissipate.

As far as the computer, the best way to avoid static around it is to make sure it stays in a decently humid, warm room. It is also helpful to keep it on a wooden desk, as wood is a notoriously bad conductor(this rule applies to keeping the charge in car batteries as well).

You may also want to consider buying a heavy plastic mat to place underneath your computer desk's chair, this will aide in dissipating any loose static electricity.

As far as grounding yourself, try to touch something wooden or plastic before touching the computer. Beyond all I can think of is anti-static slippers and wrist bracelets.

Hope that answers your questions.

There are devices available that plug into the grounding lug on outlets. You touch them before you touch your computer, and it helps dissipate the static electricity before you cause damage to your machine.

Also, static charges tend to build up as you move, because materials (clothes, skin, hair) rub against each other and transfer electrons this way.

If you use the heel of your hand when you touch something, like a doorknob, you don't feel it as much. Either that, or use a metal object, such as your keys to touch the item first.

Then explain all the static built up from the fleece I was wearing yesterday. 100% Polyester. When I took it on and off yesterday, you could hear the crackling.

Synthetic materials are usually the worst "creators" of static electricity. Polyester and Nylon being among the most well-known. Generally, the rule is that depending on the triboelectric nature of the materials that are interacting or rubbing together, different results are obtained. Rub wool against nylon, and not too much happens, but rub either of those against Polyester, and you get a charge built up.

Tires spinning on a road build up a static charge too. Ever seen or used a Van der Graaf generator? That silver ball that you put your hand on and your hair stands on end (popular demonstration)? It uses a rubber belt rubbing on nylon to build up a charge. Rubber is an insulator, and therefore a poor conductor, but it can hold a charge. In the generator, the belt takes on a positive charge, and the nylon roller takes on a negative charge.

The same thing occurs with tires on a road, you are building up a charge on the car by the interaction of the tires on the road. Ever wonder what the metal strips in front of toll booths are for? Dissipating static electricity so you don't shock the attendant when you hand him money!

The best way to prevent building up a static charge is through humidification. Use a humidifier indoors if possible.

Yeah, i'm retarted, but I blame a gut full of Scotch for that.

The same thing occurs with tires on a road, you are building up a charge on the car by the interaction of the tires on the road.

Absolutely incorrect, tires contain a compound called Carbon black that rubs off of the tire and takes static with it. I will admit that modern tires, which have less rolling resistance, do scrub off less energy than before, however they are still the most significant way that cars lose charge.

The charge static charge a car picks up as it drives is more readily created by the friction of the sheet metal through the air. As thin as air may seems, there is indeed Friction involved, usually measured by the cars Coefficient of Drag involved in any object moving through the air. This is why Pantera's work truck, which has a high cD (A Pickup truck has a cD of .5-.6) builds more charge than an aerodynamically sculpted sports car(The Average sports car has a cD of .2-.3). The higher cD allows more friction to build on the sheetmetal of the car. The second way a car builds static is the driver's interactions with the seats and other surfaces of the interior.

The best way to prevent building up a static charge is through humidification.

This is correct, Static Electricity typically does not build as well when the Relative Humidity is above 35%.

Chris The Cop, static electricity causing gas fires can be easily avoided by doing two things.

First and most importantly, do NOT wait inside the car while you are gassing up. IF you must go in the car, be sure that you ground yourself on a metal portion of the car away from the nozzle. Most static caused fires can be prevented if people grounded themselves.

Friction has nothing to do with static charges being created. Granted, it usually happens when things are rubbed together, but static charge is a product of "adhesion".

When two non-conducting materials come into contact with each other, a chemical bond (adhesion) is formed between the two materials. It is here that charged particles can be "captured" by one material or another.

Visit this website

Yes, for a while now tires have been using carbon in tires to help dissipate it, but the contact with the hard rubber and asphalt is one of the causes of it to begin with. Basically any of the moving parts generates it, pistons, crankshaft, axles, etc. But before they started using carbon in tires, that was what that metal plate in front of the toll booths was for.

Technically no, but speaking in general terms, most people understand friction, not many really understand adhesion.

That being said however, adding heat through friction to one of the contact surfaces will make the surfaces electical properties that much different, easing the seperation process.
