Ok, there's this genre of music called emo.

I like it.

I used to listen to this kind of music before it was called emo (I think this is a new term).

Anyway I love Sunny Day Real Estate and Mineral in particular and have seen them each over 20 times. They are I guess considered emo.

Sunny Day Real Estate's Diary is like the best album ever. It came out in 1994, like when Grunge was still big. It was on Sub Pop.

Anyway, what are bands like this called now: "Original Emo?" Old Emo?

I don't consider bands like Blink 182 emo, but bands I currently like are:

1) Dashboard Confessional
2) Further Seems Forever
3) Saves The Day
4) Jimmy Eat World (earlier the better)
5) Get Up Kids
and of course The Promise Ring.

And how would you classify my like current favorite band in this genre, Sigur Ros?

And how would you classify my like current favorite band in this genre, Sigur Ros?

A class unto themselves. Ambient alternative? Whatever it is, it's gorgeous and I can't get enough of it.

And emo's like punk. If you say you're emo, or someone calls you emo, you're not emo.

Ultimately, emo doesn't exist. Like punk, grunge, trip-hop, electronica, new wave, whatever, it's just a term popularlized by music journos who are simply too lazy to try and describe what they're hearing. Supposedly emo began with Embrace and Rites of Spring, the bands that essentially megered to form Fugazi. Hardly sounds like what would pass for "emo" today. Emo today is like power pop mixed with Buzzcocks styled punk-pop with attempts at Buckley-styled singing. I guess.

I always thought bands lik the Blink 182, SR-71, Sum41 were emo. Not true emo, but I guess sorda like a mainstream emo. A band with a couple guys that the little girls adore and so they get put on TRL, for a couple months.

Blink 182 has exceeded that, and I for one actually like some of their old stuff. I always thought of emo as sord of a lighte punk...not so much of the distortion.

1st rule of emo: you do not talk about Emo.

emo's a whiny answer to punk for people who don't like to think to much. or, that's my bitter and ignorant opinion

if my memory serves me correctly, "emo" is short for "emotional", the bands that sing about how they miss their girlfriends and how they are sad that they got dumped and stuff.
