Ok - i finally am getting DSL, and Verizon (running a great promotion now) told me i had a choice:
1) Have them send me an Ethernet modem which means i have to go out and buy an Ethernet card - and install it.
2) Have them send me an USB modem which will fit right on the back in one of my 2 existing USB jacks.

This seemed like a no-brainer: i chose the USB version..

Am i missing something? is there a performance difference?

I always tell people to go with the ETHERNET CARD... USB devices can act weird sometimes... The performance is the same.

Network cards are fairly inexpensive nowadays. Besides, had you gotten the network version of your DSL modem, you could have later attached a router to allow more computers to use it (assuming you have another computer) or a firewall-type device to make your connection more secure.

They also sell USB-to-network adapters for about $20 in places like Circuit City, so you could still hook it up by USB.

the issue of Verizon dsl versus cable notwithstanding ( sometime I'll releate the issues I had with cable - being charged for cable internet even though I wanted it and it was not available in my area) - I'd go with the network card setup - that will allow for other machines to use the network connection to in the future if you want.

That would explain this limp I've developed.

A.) VERIZON SUCKS

B.) DSL, for the standard speed, is slower than cable by a lot - unless you are really close to the central station.

C. USB is slower than Ethernet card.

D. As someone said, I also heard thet Earthlink DSL is a lot better, even though their service still goes through Verizon. So, if you are going to stay with DSL over cable, shitcan Verizon and get Earthlink DSL with an Ethernet card modem.

E. FUCK VERIZON

Thanks for all the advice guys.. I got DSL this week with the USB. I chose this simply on ease of just plugging it in to the back. My numbers are 715-Kbits per second and 89-Kbytes per second. My computer is old a 300Mh PII with 64ram. Verizon told me this may slow me down also.

But i need another piece of advice. Ive been told i HAVE to have a firewall even though i log off the DSL when im not on line.(i shut the computer altogether).

Should i get a free firewall? or pay for one? ive heard the free ones dont work?

no if you shut down your computer when your not using it. you should be ok but get a good antivirus like norton 2002.

Should i get a free firewall? or pay for one? ive heard the free ones dont work? There are some OK free firewalls out there, but if you turn off your machine when not in use, you should only need to turn off NetBIOS over TCP/IP in your network settings, and either password protect or turn off file/printer sharing, which should be bound only to NetBIOS.

Simple explanation:

NetBIOS is a protocol that Windows uses to find shared drives or printers. If you have sharing active on your computer, someone can use a scanner and find your accessable drives using this protocol. If you disable the NetBIOS over TCP/IP, it can't be accessed over the internet (although TCP/IP ports still can).

If you're not running a web or ftp server, then you shouldn't have any open TCP/IP ports, but you should check with some security sites such as grc.com or broadband reports. Broadband reports offers forums, speed tests and security info, and is worth checking out.
