Are there times when you think that maybe technology is responsible for more
harm than good? Like when spam junk mail clogs your email inbox like cholesterol plaques in the artery of a 89 year old overweight man with his own private table at Peter Lugers? When you begin to long for the days before the World Wide Web, a simpler time when penmanship mattered because people actually wrote and mailed things called letters? And most importantly, when great movies were being made that had great plots, non-stop action, and incredible acting? Soon after we put a man on the moon a film genre started that now makes me long for the days when this great country of ours put its collective minds to use to produce things like the movie Dolemite.
Of course you remember Dolemite, the legendary character created by comic Rudy Ray Moore, the father of all pimp gangsta playa flicks, which perhaps influenced black street culture and rap music more than anything else.
So, next time you find yourself sweating the small stuff, drowning your
sorrows in beer and crying into your Palm Pilot, pop in a copy of Dolemite, and
realize the world is a better place. Like a good plate of mac and cheese, it's comfort food, but for different senses....
Poor black-lung afflicted people work 15 hour days to strip ore in West Virginia to mine metals that make the wires that scatter electrons
across VCRs and DVD players that somehow miraculously get transformed into movies like Dolemite.
Do not mourn the land, stripped of its copper. Celebrate Dolemite, Queen Bee, and of course, Creeper.
What's your favorite Blaxploitation flick?
If my memory serves me correctly...
