A contract with my company is coming to an end. They want me to relocate to Indiana.
The fellowing is the offer.

1. SilenSpic will become supervisor. (Poor Bastards)
2. No Pay raise. reason: economy.
3. No Relocation cash except a plane ticket to get there.
4. fuck the fourth... I declined.

Within a month I'll be jobless. What do you think of the offer? Did I make the right decision?

No you didnt

If the choice is no job in a depressed market, or a job in indiana i would take the job in indiana, work there while looking for something back home.

I am contractor who can be let go on a moments notice, and have tried to keep my options open about a new job, while appeasing the people i work for now. It sucks but you gotta do what you gotta do to make money.

and as far as the 4 reasons:
1. Supervisor means you are wanted in this company...they trust you to manage other people which is good and can only help your resume in the long run
2. No raise now---but in a few months check back with what you have accomplished since you moved and how the people are responding to you being a supervisor
3. No relocation cash is bad i agree--but call the HR department of your company and talk about this and try to get money out of it, and if you cant i am sure there is some kind of tax write off in there somewhere

My last bit of advice is this: Dont think short sighted think for the future.
A move to Indiana will suck now but in a year or two when you can put you were a supervisor on your resume and that will only make you more attractive to potential employees

But this is just my opinion i could be wrong

Do you feel like you made the right choice? For me, I would have made the same choice. Moving costs alot, and to relocate in a place where you will be unhappy is insane. Screw what everyone says about hte economy, if you want a job bad enough here you can get one. You might not enjoy the job but you can still stay where you want. Try Temping. It pays the bills. As for the market, it is turning around. You did the right thing if you feel you did the right thing...and why the hell would you want to move to indiana? For a job? Screw that...life is not about work. Never let work decide your life.

Prior to my switching jobs a couple of years ago, a friend of mine got me a prospect out in Chicago with a major telecom company. All he kept telling me was the benefits and everything I would be getting, how stable the company is since its a large company, etc. etc.

I sent a resume and got a response. 1 week later, I hear in the news how this company is going to lay off in excess of 1,000 workers in the field I was going for (last hired first fired?) Needless to say, I didn't take the job and my friend has shut up about it.

I probably wouldn't have moved anyway. The market was good at the time, but showing signs of an eventual downward trend. Had I moved out there (supposing this happened before the layoffs). I might have sold my place, been out in Chicago, and jobless.

SS- I don't know what to tell you, it could go either way, but I wish you the best of luck.

Did you check out what the cost of living is there? You may not get a raise right away, but what you are making may go much farther there. Also, I believe that you can deduct your moving expenses come tax time.

I would check out housing/apt costs and make a comparison you may be surprised by the difference in costs.

Sorry, but that was kind of a bad choice. The job market is the shakiest it's been in a decade.

You could have taken the job and starting looking for one in NY immediatly - its always less stressful to be in a working position while job hunting.

What you also could have done is ask them to fire you - by quiting, you forgo 39 weeks of unemployment = almost 50% of your prior salary capped at around $ 450 a week!!! thats not bad! By quiting you get Zero.
Im sure the good people on the board can give you hints on how to get fired ;)

I agree with Mort about telling them you'll take it, then looking for something.
But I quit my job last Sept. I had what a lot of people thought was a dream job, but it wasn't fun anymore and I wanted something different. At 1st, I thought I'd be OK, but then 9/11 and the economy got worse and it took me about 10 months to find something. It was a REALLY hard 10 months, but I worked PT to get by. Now I have a sick job that I really like.

What I'm trying to say is, I kind of did the same thing as you and I thought I made a bad decision for a long time, but eventually everything worked out and now I'm happier than I would have been had I not quit. So, if you really don't want to move and this is the decision you've made, just realize that it might get tough, but eventually everything will work out.

i thought you disappeared until december
First reason: Posting at R&F.net started to affect my job duties. None of the assignments given to me were getting complete.

Second reason: Then the job offer came about.
Originally management thought I was taken the job, so did I.
So plans were being made to make the transition go smoothly.
But reminiscent of my ******* got me depressed.
I wouldn't be able to see her for six months or worse, an entire year.
I wanted to be alone, so I thought an Extended Vacation would've been appropriate.
So I changed my mind and will you know the rest.

Alright I feel the need to put my two cents in here. I have lived in Indiana and although it is not nearly as nice as New York it is much cheaper to live. YOu may not be getting a raise but you would definatly be much better off in the money sence because all of your expenses will be half of what they are here. For example gas out there is probably about a buck and pennies. Rent out there is about 200-300 for a one bed or studio. And Indiana is full of colleges with hot girls. Granted Indiana is in the Bible belt but these girls when they get rebelious are wild. I think tha tyou would have a a good time and within a few months be very comfortable living out there. <P>
