God dammit.

NEW YORK - Legendary hip-hop DJ Jam Master Jay of Run-DMC was shot and killed in Queens on Wednesday (October 30), according to the group's camp.

Police have confirmed that two men were shot inside a studio on Merrick Boulevard at 7:30 p.m. local time and say the victims have not been identified.

According to police, one man was dead on arrival after being rushed to a local hospital. Representatives for Run-DMC claim the victim was Jam Master Jay, a.k.a. Jason Mizell.

Police did not disclose the condition of the other victim.

Right before the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards in August, Darryl McDaniels, a.k.a. Jay's longtime musical compatriot DMC, said that the Queens group was going to hit the studio and road for an album and tour in commemoration of their 20th anniversary (see "Run-DMC Plan Return To B-Boyism On Anniversary LP").

Run-DMC, who recently wrapped a tour with Kid Rock and Aerosmith, were scheduled to perform Thursday (October 31) as part of the half-time festivities at a Washington Wizards home game.

MTV News will have more on this story as it develops.

What a shame. I love Run DMC. They were the first rap group I was into. Some of my best memories were from the summer of 1987 coming out of the hospital and listening to "Raising Hell" and Beastie Boys "License to Ill". Run DMC always stayed pretty loyal to their sound. Jam Master Jay, you'll be missed!!!! Always Tougher than Leather!!!!!

I'm surprised at how many memories hearing Run DMC is bringing back. I absolutely hate rap/hip-hop/whatever they call it these days, but back in the 80's run dmc was amazing! Just listen to the lyrics (and yes believe it or not, it is possible to rap and be understood, at least it was). So positive. Anti drug. Anti violence, Anti crime. And not preachy at all. Very cool. Nowadays its all about who's done the most time, or whos killed the most peopel or whatever lie they wanna brag about. Ok, I'm rambling, but I'm just pissed that this amazing talent has been silenced by the violence that is so glorified in todays rap.

CTC, that's not rambling, we call that 'putting it perfectly'. I was broken up about this, but that brought a tear to my eye.

Goddamn, this sucks....I mean it really sucks! All of these good, talented hip-hop performers are leaving the earth at their prime-time...it just isn't fair.

So once again, the music industry mourns the loss of a true great. Whether you're a fan of rock, hip hop, R&B, pop, be sure that this man and the rest of RUN DMC had a hand in helping it grow. Raising Hell was the first album ever given to me and opened me up to a whole other world that I probably would have come acrossed later on, but it brought me in on a positive sense.

Musicians and fans alike owe this man and others like him a debt of gratitude for what he's done for the music industry and communities as a whole. He is a legend and will surely be missed. It's time we stop having to bury the young ones for unnecessary violent reasons.

My condolences go out to Jay, his family, friends and fans. One love.

i'm really stunned. i grew up in the Bronx in the 80s, so all we had was rap. i feel like a part of my youth was just shot dead.

Why would anyone want to kill him anyway?

Nice to see that MTV has something on FINALLY! Like after 2Pac and Biggie died and even Kurt Cobain, MTV was on it immediately. I was waiting for something last night but NOTHING! I almost wonder if MTV and news stations alike have the footage in a "This (insert celebrity name here) will die soon, have this edited so the minute something bad happ[ens we can have it all over the TV first!" I wouldn't doubt it. Wait, I spoke a little too soon becasue now they are playing awful EMINEM. There would be n Eminem if it were not for Run DMC. WTF? I'm pissed!

...and WHERE IS THE MTV COVERAGE ON THIS?!? Have they no respect or is it on MTV2 which I don't get. MTV has this show on about dwarves in college and their relationships. No offense to the dwarves out there but WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?!? Forgive me for venting but I am really pissed off here. Now they are throwing each other ina poopl. I lost respect for MTV before but this is ridiculous.

All Run-DMC wanted to do was make the best damn party music around. They never rapped about killing anyone. It was just all about skill, flow and good times. You will be missed, Jay. Thanks for everything you left us. I'm blasting "Pied Piper" right now just for you.

RIP Jay. And props to Earl and the boys for sticking around on their own time to pay tribute to a man who was truly a gift to the world. Run DMC's music didn't just propel hip hop into the American mainstream, it's reach could be found in all corners of the globe, even today. I was in Tokyo a couple years ago in a club called "Harlem" and there were, no joke, 500 Japanese kids in Adidas sweatsuits, shell toes and Kangols listening to old school hip hop! Songs like Rock Box, King of Rock and Walk This Way paved the way for rap-rock and their lyrics were always hard, without being profane. See you in Heaven Jay, I hope the man upstairs has you on the wheels when I reach the pearly gates. Peace

This really sucks.

I absolutely idolized Run DMC in the 80s. Their first two albums were the first rap albums (yes, albums, as in vinyl) I ever owned, and I went out and bought every one of their albums after that for the next several years. I used to wear the Adidas sweatsuits, the Adidas sneakers with no laces, etc. Me and my older brother knew every word to every one of their songs and we used to drive my mother nuts by constantly rapping Run DMC lyrics in the car on long trips.

Being a hardcore Run DMC fan since 1984, I was so happy to finally go see them live two months ago when they opened for Aerosmith and Kid Rock at Jones Beach. They only did a short set that night, but me and my girlfriend sat there and sang along with every word to every song they did.

R.I.P. Jam Master Jay. :(

I'm so glad that this board has been sympathetic towards JMJ. I've read so much today that is so negative (just another rapper dead so what else is new blahblahblah). I remember being about 9 years old and being into Iron Maiden and Judas Priest and hearing "Rock Box" for the first time. I thought this sounds like rock but there is something so different and just better. Damn. Now I'm 27 and I hear bands like POD and rappers like Nelly and think what the fuck happenend. To quote Chuck D, "Run-DMC first said a DJ could be a band. Stand on it's own feet. Get you out your seat." Man, now the "dj's" you see on stage hardly do anything they push butttons to play a track. Just ask Muggs why he doesn't tour with Cypress Hill any more.

Man I remember going to my friend's house back in '86 just to listen to Raising Hell 'cause we didn't have a record player. Their Walk this Way was the reason I even listened to Aerosmith. If any musician deserved to live old and die peacefully it was him. Damn it the good ones die, the crappy ones live forever.

Wanted to bring this to the top for selfish reasons.
Haven't been on the board much lately so when I found this thread I just wanted pay my respects.
I was effin' blown away in '83 when I heard RUN DMC.
Made me appreciate rap from that point on.
RUN DMC was and is about havin' fun and partying.
The whole rap community owes Jam Master Jay a debt of gratitude.
RIP brotha'.....
