View Full Version : Match/ Event/ Interview that made a career.
With the way their pushing Lesnar with his victories over Hogan, the Rock, and the Undertaker it got me thinking about other wrestlers who's entire careers were built from one event.
Austin beating Jake the Snake to win the King of the Ring and give his "You may have your John 3:16, well Austin 3:16 says that I just kicked your ass" speech. From there Austin blew up until earlier this year when he finally exploded.
Rocky Maivia doing an interview with Jennifer Flowers at Wrestlemania 15 (I think?) Up until that point Rocky wasn't very interesting during his promos, but during this interview he was over the top. It was really the first time he played it totaly smug. This was the first time he used the phrase "If you smell what I'm cooking?" and the last time I found him entertaining.
The Hardys/Edge & Christian Ladder match at No Mercy to top of the Terri Invitational Tournament. This is the match that brought both of these teams from mid-card jobbers to marquee attractions. It was also the match that turned the ladder match from heavyweights climbing and reaching for belts to high flyers using it as a launching pad.

I agree with everything you stated. But i also think that Austin vs. Hart at WrestleMania gave Austin the ultimate push.

The classic Sting vs. Ric Flair time limit draw from the very first Clash of the Champions helped put a young Sting on the map as a major player.
The Hardys/Edge & Christian Ladder match at No Mercy to top of the Terri Invitational Tournament. This is the match that brought both of these teams from mid-card jobbers to marquee attractions.
Outside of Edge....aren't they still midcard jobbers?
It was also the match that turned the ladder match from heavyweights climbing and reaching for belts to high flyers using it as a launching pad.
And shortly afterward, the WWE began running the gimmick into the ground.

Sadly, the hardys and Christian are much better off then they were 3 years ago. I still don't understand the Matt Hardy push.
The only problem with creating a cool gimmick of any kind now is that they run it into the ground quickly instead of letting it slowly develop. It just doesn't stay special.

I think Shawn Michaels big match was against Bret Hart at Survivor Series 1992. It was right after Bret won his first World Title. They put on an incredible match. It was HBKs first great match since his singles push began. Before that he was trapped in mid-card land. Even his IC vitory over Davey Boy Smith was lacking.

okay, speaking of Davy Boy i'd say that match that made him was his beating Bret at the Summerslam in England...as far as shawn micheals goes i think his real defining moment was when he threw marty jannety through the wall in the barbershop...thats when the whole HBK thing started

I still don't understand the Matt Hardy push
because he's the only one out of jeff, christian, and himself that can do a promo, and he's a damn good technical wrestler. If Paul Heyman has faith in him, than so should we.

I was all for him moving to SD but not to turn into this cry-baby,
I love the Mattitude angle! It gives him a chance to show off his promo chops. You gotta be a heel before you can be a face in the WWE. I just wish they'd let him wrestle as a shoot stylist. People still expect him to be a high-flyer, but he stopped doing that a long while ago (after he shattered his shoulder doing a swanton off the steel cage). He bulked up, and now no one knows what to expect.

was all for him moving to SD but not to turn into this cry-baby
Hell, the 'crybaby' thing worked for Chris Jericho in WCW ('It's a conspiracy!')... of course, after his first few months in the WWF, his career was shot to hell.
Matt's always been my favorite of the Hardys, because he could actually throw some honest-to-gawd wrestling maneuvers into a match instead of flinging himself around like Jeff. The Mattitude thing works well on him, but after a couple weeks of promise, good ol' WWe shunted him off to the lower tiers once again. My hope is that he can get into a decent program, but with all the 'main guys' on Smackdown already tied up in their own angles, he really doesn't have much to do right now.

Oh, and...

Roddy Piper smashing Snuka with a Coconut. I think that propelled him to wrestling's ultimate heel.

i thought jericho's interview with the rock before the rumble was one of the best things i've ever seen.
even with the title everyone saw him as a transitional champ, but when he came out to the rock's face and said "i am not a joke you stupid son of a bitch", my heart dropped. that is one of the greatest moments i've ever seen in wrestling. that entire interview made me so proud of him, and it stepped him up a notch to me.

can't say the guy has had a huge career, but when Shane Douglas threw down the NWA belt and formed ECW was one of the coolest promos I've seen.
I also thought the introduction by Heyman of ECW into the WWE was awesome. just hearing the old ECW music. to bad that died after about a month.

And then they've booked him as nothing but a joke...oh, pretty much every day since.
But don't get me wrong, I'm a Jericho fan.

Jericho was given the best intro into the WWF with the "Countdown to the Millenium" clock (Getting so much attention that WCW started calling Goldberg "The Millenium man" almost immediately to steal the heat) and he came in interupting a Rock promo when the Rock was at his highest. That showed a lot of support for Jericho.

Even though hes now stuck as a stupid announcing piece of crap. When Tazz debuted it was a huge event cause he punked out kurt angle and ended his winning streak.

When Ric Flair defeated Harleyt Race for his second NWA World title at Starrcade, that was the beginning of the Flair era. There is nothing NOTHING like the rassling of the NWA in the mid eighties. There never will be better wrestling than in those dark and smokey arenas in the Carolinas.
What about Steamboat/Savage at wrestlemania 3? I think that may have just been another milestone for Steamboat (I can't remember if that was before or after his feud with Flair), but by the next year Savage was world champion and was raised to that elite level for most of the rest of his career.
