View Full Version : Senator Paul Wellstone

Senator Paul Wellstone from Minnesota was killed with his wife and daughter and three campaign workers in a plane crash today. Senator Wellstone was one of the members of Congress that I respect most. He is certainly liberal, (I would define him as progressive), but he was not ideologically driven. As a former college professor, he was the guy who knew the issues and took principled and courageous stands on behalf of the little guy. I know of Senator Wellstone through human rights work here in DC. I've met him once and I've worked with his foreign policy staff.Wellstone was the guy to go to when the Indonesian military was massacring the East Timorese. He would sponsor the legislation that would impose consequenses on the Indonesian military. When he gave speeches on East Timor, they were substantive and powerful. And the thing I respect most about this is that East Timorese don't vote for Minnesota Senators. While many members of Congress will never take any stand that doesn't benefit them politically, Wellstone was one of the few that was driven by principles. That's what I respect about Wellstone, that he was not driven by his own carreer. Many members of Congress would choose a human rights issue somewhere in the world and champion (or pretend to champion), in order to fend off criticism for their policies on other parts of the world. Wellstone was the guy who believed in human rights and fought hard for the ordinary people of the world.
There will, of course be many speeches from public figures praising Senator Wellstone. In my opinion, Wellstone is one of the few Senators who truly deserves high praise. This is a loss for ordinary Americans, ordinary people of the world, and for the best principles of America. I'm very very sad about this.

You hate to see this happen to anyone. The fact that his wife and daughter were with him is heartwrenching.

A sad day in Minnesota.
Question: Was he behind in the polls?
See, the problem is that God gives men a brain and a penis, and only enough blood to run one at a time.

Was he behind in the polls?
It was a close race, and he was well-known for not paying attention to polls.

As usual, well said Yerdaddy.

Wellstone was one of the few Washington politicians who had the courage of his convictions and stood above the partisian hacks and media whores that dominate the place. Even though I disagreed with his positions on a number of issues, I always respected his integrity and his advocacy of those who were getting rolled by the new economic order. Without voices like his, the carte blanche given to the privileged in our society by Bush (and, to a large extent, Clinton before him) will go unchallenged.

Itis very sad to see a good man, his family, and his staff die in such a terrible way. My condolences.
It was a close race, and he was well-known for not paying attention to polls.
.. being a sucessful incumbant senator, he was leading, but it was very close. Absentee ballots will not be changed, yet regular ballots can be replaced with a new Democratic nominee. Politically, this is bad for the Democrats. The Republicans will more than likely win this seat.

A very sad day. The few politicians I have respect for are the ones who stand up for their beliefs no matter what. No matter how you think about his politics, he never sold out.
Interesting to think about though:
2000 - Mel Carnahan dies in a plane crash the week before election after running for Senate seat in Missouri.
2002 - Paul Wellstone dies while running for Senate seat in Missouri.
A coincidence, no doubt. But something to think about, nonetheless.
-edit- It probably isn't feasibly possible at this point to change the ballot. In the NJ Senate race, the state office said the latest it could possibly change the ballot was the 17th.

Even Rush Limbaugh today seemed incredibly saddened and at a loss for words when talking about the senator's death. He must have been a truly remarkable man. I believe he leaves behind 2 adult children. Theyre in my thoughts.

Although I couldn't be more idealogically opposed to someone if I tried, I always got the feeling Wellstone was truly convinced that his policies were the best thing for his constituents and his country.
He was fiery and passionate, and even acknowledged that voting against the war in Iraq may have spelled doom for his reelection, but insisted that he had to vote with his conscience and not for political gain.
I'm saddenned for his family and friends on their terrible loss.

One of the few Democrats who still represented the liberal ideals that supposedly define the party. A great speaker, a great fighter, and a great man. He will be very missed.

While I didn't agree with his politics, I did respect the Senator for remaining so committed to his ideals. Like Ted Kennedy, you know Paul Wellstone truly believed in what he stood for and fought for. His votes against both the Gulf War and the latest Resolution giving Bush authority to go to war against Iraq (even in the face of a tough reelection campaign) prove that he was a politician who was guided by principles, not polls. A rare quality indeed.

Not a coincidence in the way you intended: Wellstone was running for re-election in Minnesota. However, he is the seventh Minnesotan senator to die in office.

It probably isn't feasibly possible at this point to change the ballot. In the NJ Senate race, the state office said the latest it could possibly change the ballot was the 17th.
Obviously, election laws vary from state to state. As governor, Jesse Ventura does have the authority to appoint someone to fill the seat and represent the Democrats in the election (right now Walter Mondale's name is being brought up as a replacement), but given the shock and sadness of this tragedy, no appointment is expected to be named for at least a few days.

An honest, not maudlin elegy for Sen. Wellstone from Mickey Kaus on Slate. Kaus' usual primary form of entertainment is eviserating knee-jerk liberal cant.

Even though he was a Liberal, it still was truly heart wrenching to hear that he died with his wife, daughter, and 3 aids. And let's not forget the pilots.
I had originally heard that Ted Kennedy MIGHT have been on the plane, and I must admit, I was a little happt to hear that. Alas, the blated bastard appeared alive and well on TV a few hours later. Ah well.
NO matter what your beliefs, I hate to see Americans die like that. And even conservatives on the TV have said that he was a genuinly nice guy.
People on both sides of an argument keep everyone honest sometimes, and our elected government is the greatest in the world. So becaue of this, I also mourn the loss of Mr. Wellstone.

Very sad, especially with the family and aids. Like many others here, I can't imagine a politician with whom I could disagree with more on a vote by vote level. At the same time, he was one of the few senators who's motives were unimpeachable. He was that most dying breed of pol, the principled kind, and that's reason enough for me to regret his loss.
