I was wondering about joining up, and I heard a bunch of Marines call in before.
Can anyone give me any advice about this, especially on boot camp?

Truly think about it.. My brother has been in the Marines for a year and a half.. Boot camp is a mother fucker and do realize with the way things are going right now, you could be fighting a war.. really sit back and think hard about this..

If I did join it would be in like 8 months to a year or so.
I need plenty of time to get in shape, plus I don't know if I want to go to Iraq

I'd go off and fight, I'm just not hot to join RIGHT NOW.
I'd definitely have to do a lot of running etc. before hand.
Also, I don't want to be in it till retirement. You have to stay in for 20 years, and I don't think I want that.

My brother in Law is in the Navy, he Loves it. Alot of the guys he is with on the Carriers are marines. Most of them love it. I know alot of guys who wnet through the Marine Boot camp and they said they really learn to appreciate the little things. The one guy said if he got a piece of chocolate once in 4 weeks it was like someone buying you a brand new car. They also said it is HARD as a mother fucker and some people have litterally broken legs and arms and ribs, and have kept going.

had a brother who served for 4 years, he did very well in the Marines but "not-too-well" when he got out...he didn't learn a skill and put all his hopes into being a State Trooper...when the Board in Trenton turned him down, let's just say he's been on/off medication and in/out of jail a few times ever since(about 20 years now)
Funny, through the turmoil he mangaed to attend 4 years at Jersey City State and graduate...
if your going in plan to stay in until retirement...i worked alongside a retired Marine for the past few years and he is receiving a good pension, retired young and in good health, and continued to work and earn extra money...
plus his attitude was "don't give me no shit" and would tell the bosses off often...
he even called the CEO of one of the Telecoms when he wasn't getting good service...

I think you just answered your own question. A soldier doesn't get to choose his battles, he goes where he is told to go, and kills who he is told to kill. You have to ask yourself if you are will to do that, to give up your choices and put them in the hands of those above you. It takes a tremendous amount of faith and trust in your superiors and in your government.

i would say sign up for 4 years and see how you like it before saying you want to do it until retirement... also not wanting to go somewhere is not a choice you have... so far my brother has been in the middle of oklahoma in the dead of winter, 29 Palms which is in the dessert of cali..in the summer and now is over seas in japan... just sit back and talk with people about it... lots of cops are ex military so if you know any talk to them...

I have no problem going anywhere; I understand that it comes with the job.
But I want to see how current events pan out before signing up anyway.
By the time I'd be in good shape for boot camp any skirmish with Iraq would be over with.
If I signed up it would probably be at the end of next semester.

If I liked it maybe then I would go till retirement.
The Marines treat their people VERY well.
I talked to a recruiter right after high school. He joined when he was 17 and was eligible for retirement at 37. Sounds pretty good to me, of course you'd get a better retirement package the longer you stayed in.
He really loved it.
He was stationed on a ship with the Navy and saw the entire Mediteranean area, lived in Australia I believe, lived in Germany, and did embassy duty in Singapore where he met his wife.

You don't need to get in shape...they'll WHUP your ass into shape for you.
To each their own. Everyone I know who signed up either loves it and it becomes his or her life, and the rest loathe it as the most miserable experience ever. Take your pick.

My plan originally was to go
to the Naval academy, got
an appointment and
everything. then become a
marine aviator, or naval
aviator... but broke my back.
no wmy best freind is going
thru OCS (officers
candidate school). thats
the way to go, they pay ur
tuition, u get paid for 6
weeks/summer of OCS and
upon graduation of college
u are only required to do 4
years of active duty as an
OFFICER. thats the way to
go man.

I know all about getting everything in writing.
I've heard a lot of stories of people taking the recruiters word that they can get a certain job, and then they get shoved in infantry.
But it's a plain fact that the military does treat their people well.
I've talked to many people about this.
My friend has almost all of his college paid for by the Navy and he's seen the world.

hahaha how gullable are you? this is like a car salesman telling you that the pinto is "a good car, really!"
thats all recruiters are, sales people. for every person they recruit they get money and rank. its like making commision off a sale, the same thing.
the truth is if you do join GET EVERYTHING IN WRITING!!! simply make demands and put everything in writing or they will screw you, guaranteed. trust me i had two relatives in the marines. one got everything in writing, and one didn't, two VERY different results. so cover your ass, cause they aint gunna do it.

Join the Army. Seriously. The Marines are great but there is much more opportunity for advancement and specialized training in the Army.
That's my advice. Also, if you are college bound, check out ROTC and try to enter the military as an officer.

Recruiters don't get bonuses or promotions based on how many recruits they manage to garner. Some might stretch the truth a bit. If you're going to join the military, take into consideration the things you value most.
If you want to stay CONUS no matter what, go for the Coast Guard. If you want quality of life, go for the Air Force. If you want great educational benefits, go Army. If you want lots of travel, go Navy. If you want to prove something to yourself, go Corps.

I spent some time in the Marines, never went to service, and left due to injury. Had i not screwed up my back i would still be there to this day. For any young man the Marines are a great experience, really gives you some discipline. Plus the ladies love a Marine.

umm, actually yes they do, thats the first thing they tell you when you sign, if you wanna recruit after boot. if you sign up a certain amount of people you gain rank and in some cases if you work out the right deal, will get a bonus. i have plenty of relatives in the military and i firend that just joined the navy, so i know it to be true.

They don't get anything special for recruiting people
That's their job.
They're supposed to just do it, and just like any other job you don't get anything special for just doing what you're supposed to do.

Marine Recon Rangers
Brian,
The Rangers are patt of the Army. I think you may mean Marine Force Recon.
If they took the Ranger title they are cramping the Army's style.

My old boyfriend, Jeff, signed up for the Marines when he was 18, and he loved it!!!! Now he is at boot camp for the Coast Guard. If you are strong both inside and out, I'm sure you will do great! I wrote a zine all about the Marine Corps (I gave it to Jeff for our one year anniversary). From my research and interviews, it seems like a wonderful branch to belong to. Good luck...

Recruiters (usually) DO get incentives for enlisting more people...it's not extra pay at that time but it can be extra time off, less hassles etc. Marines do indeed get plenty of tail.....I'm the the Navy, and it's no contest. As others have said, you need to have a plan on what you want to do. Example - you want to work in the intelligence field, so you enlist with a contract in that specialty. At the end of your enlistment, you have options both in and out of the service. BTW 'taking care of their people' has many meanings. I joined with a 2-year degree and am working on my PhD, all paid for by Uncle Sammy. But, I've done duties (for example, on a sub) where my pay was screwed up and my wife was left hanging....without the intervention of some higher up buds, it would have been a real mess. I've also seen people get a screw job and booted out wrongly. I've seen folks get back to back deployments (despite what their orders stated) and have a spouse leave because they couldn't take the seperation and uncertainity. Point is, it's a mixed bag...assumeing some position between the worst horror story and the most awsome story is probably the safest route. <P>

Pussy Frenchmen
USMC 1, France 0
France meets the USMC, or a Marine Lieutenant Colonel in Bosnia. "A funny thing happened to me yesterday at Camp Bondsteel. A French army officer walked up to me in the PX, and told me he thought we (Americans) were a bunch of cowboys and were going to provoke a war. He said if such a thing happens, we wouldn't be able to count on the support of France. I told him that it didn't surprise me. Since we had come to France's rescue in World War I, World War II, Vietnam, and the Cold War, their ingratitude and jealousy was due to surface at some point in the near future anyway. That is why France is a third-rate military power with a socialist economy and a bunch of ******s for soldiers. I additionally told him that America, being a nation of deeds and action, not words, would do whatever it had to do, and France's support was only for show anyway. Just like in ALL NATO exercises, the US would shoulder 85% of the burden, as evidenced by the fact that the French officer was shopping in the American PX, and not the other way around. He began to get belligerent at that point, and I told him if he would like to, I would meet him outside in front of the Burger King and beat his ass in front of the entire Multi-National Brigade East, thus demonstrating that even the smallest American had more fight in him than the average Frenchman. He called me a barbarian cowboy and walked away in a huff. With friends like these, who needs enemies?"
