Years ago costumes came in a box with a cellophane window exposing the mask of the featured character. They also came with a very flamable polyester smock.

The masks were uncomfortable and your breathe turned to water vapor on the inside of the mask dripping down your face.I tripped countless times on street corners and neighbors steps because of that "skirt".After the first couple of houses the mask usually came off for the night.

And that cheap rubber band always popped out of that staple like a half hour into it.

Holy shit! You guys just brought back some memories (more like nightmares) with this!

They were truly awful, and the mask DID always break almost immediately. We'd see the advertisements for those costumes and think they were just about the coolest things in the world. What a disappointment once you wore it, though.

And yet we fell for it year after year.

You just reminded me of my Darth Vader costume, Halloween 1977.

Every year we shopped for a new one. My alltime favorite was the year I went as Bullwinkle. The worst? I went as James Bond. It looked horrible.

I got a Strawberry Shortcake costume one year, and the holes didn't match up to my eyes or nose or mouth. I couldn't breathe and I kept getting spit in my nose.

To this day, I get frightened whenever I see Strawberry Shortcake, and I can't even eat strawberries without vomiting.

and I can't even eat strawberries without vomiting.

Then why bother eating the strawberries?

I don't anymore.

I can't even smell them.

I'm uncomfortable discussing it in general.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make you feel uncomfortable. You don't mind me poking you with this stick do you?

While I'm eating strawberries?

I think I remember being a Care Bear and Rainbow Brite, I sooooooo wanted to be Strawberry Shortcake, but they were always sold-out, from the looks of the trauma 'gagging', I'm glad they were.

One year I was Superman, another year I was Bo Duke from the ukes of Hazzard (I usd to love that show).

Those things would never cost more then 5 bucks and I remember it being a hassle every year convincing my mother to get me one and not make me be a "ghost".
