I'm not a huge fan of Anime, but I know some people are. I guess this film at one time was considered the benchmark, I'm not sure if it still is. I've seen some stuff, Akira included, and I have to say it was pretty good. Anywhoo, this was on Dark Horizons today. Seems like it could be news to Anime fans.
Akira: Variety reports that Warner Bros. will produce a live-action English-language remake of the Japanese 1988 anime classic feature. Director Stephen Norrington ("Blade", "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen") will reteam with "League" screenwriter James Robinson to pen the script whilst Jon Peters will produce. This remake will follow the original story of a futuristic motorbike gang leader who must rescue his younger brother from his involvement in a secret government project. Thanks to 'FanHalen'.

that could be good news or bad. when they put the original akira on dvd i was pretty excited but when i heard the new voice acting i was disgusted. half the charm of an anime movie is the sub-par japanese to english translation.

anime turned live action ususally is horrible. just like the already doomed "Dragonball Z" live action film in the works. i say leave akira alone, its a masterpiece as is.
in any case thanks for the heads up black jeezis

I actually loved the latest translation. Normally I'm all about the original Japanese, but the new translation had some spark and emotion to the voices, and they got the pronunciation correct...
Anyone see "Metropolis"? And the english version of "Princess Mononoke" was decent...

Not sure what happened to the deal six years ago... but it looks like it is back on.
DiCaprio Bringing Akira To Life
Leonardo DiCaprio is teaming up with Warner Brothers to produce a live-action film based on the Japanese manga and anime film Akira, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Ruairi Robinson has been hired to direct what would ideally be a two-part epic. The film would mark the first full-length feature for Robinson, whose animated SF comedy short Fifty Percent Grey was nominated for an Oscar. Gary Whitta is writing the adaptation, which DiCaprio will produce through his production company, Appian Way.
Akira originated in 1988 as a manga and then as an animated film co-written and directed by Katsuhiro Otomo. The story was set in a neon-lit futuristic post-nuclear-war "New Tokyo" in 2019, where a teen biker-gang member is subjected to a government experiment which unleashes his latent powers. The gang's leader must find a way to stop the ensuing swath of destruction.
Akira has long been in development at the company, with producers Jon Peters and Basil Iwanyk involved at various times, as well as directors Stephen Norrington and Pitof. The rights lapsed but Warner managed to acquire them again for Robinson, who came to the studio with a vision of a two-part adaptation.
The new story moves the action to "New Manhattan," a city rebuilt by the Japanese. The studio is eyeing a summer 2009 release for the first movie.

I would be a total fan of a well done live action Akira.. I loved the original, it changed my life. However, I figure they will get some shitdick like Michael Bay to do it, and it will suck ever holy balls.

Same here - I think Akira is a miraculous movie and is one of the few I can point to with pride when somebody asks "why do you like that comic and fantasy stuff?"
The problem is, I am not sure if they CAN make a good live action movie out of Akira. The CGI effects have advanced enough, but few directors (and production companies) have the vision or dedication to make a good "translation."
Sadly, I give it an 85% chance of being a disappointment to fans of the original.
The new story moves the action to "New Manhattan," a city rebuilt by the Japanese.
And this is one of the reasons why my hopes are so low. WTF is wrong with placing the movie in it's original location?!?!?!?! The damn city was decimated and rebuilt - there wouldn't be any recognizable architecture that survived so why does it have to be in the US?
If they fuck this up like they did the premise of "Constantine" I might severely injure somebody...

Although Mojo, I think I might be a little tough on the guy. He just grates on me, I can never quite get past his face. It is hard to buy him in any movie. He runs like a girl and he comes off a tad too prissy in the parts he plays. In the Departed he was just cringe inducing every time he had to step into the tough guy role.
Although I did like him in Gilbert Grape.

There was some awful music video a few years ago for some generic pop chick that had an amazing Kineda bike, so I think that will be pulled off with ease.

The movie was rumored to take the six-book original series by Katsuhiro Otomo and translate it into two feature films. Ruairi Robinson was attached to direct the project.
Bloody Disgusting is now reporting that the film is dead in the water.
Sad news comes in this weekend as we have learned that not only has Robinson left the project, but Tetsuo and Kaneda's adventure is "dead as a doornail," a report we've confirmed with two separate sources.
