So many, I have to go with Roberto Clemente. The guy was incredible.I loved Mantle, but I saw him in his down years. Clemente could do it all, I wish he played in NY.

I know he's been down the last couple of years due to injury, but Ken Griffey Jr.
in Seattle was as complete a player you can get.

I agree Grifey in his prime is as good as a baseball player gets. The best display of pitching I ever saw was Gooden in 1984, he was tipping his pitches and they still couldn't hit them.

Toss up between Steve Balboni and Kevin Mass.
But seriously people, are we talking about who had the best numbers.....or maybe who was best in the post season? Hiters, pitchers, defensive players are all good at different things......whos to say that a shortstop thats bats .300 with 25 hrs and 110 rbi's is better or worse than a pitcher that goes 18-5 with a 3.25 era? What is Pedro Martinez like a full run/run and a half under his nearest competitors era? That like someone winning the home run race by 25 homers. Whos better, Pedro or Barry Bonds?
And whos to say if A-Rod is better than Jeter? Is it determined by the fact that his numbers are superior or is Jeter better because of his incredible postseason perfomances and the fact that hes a center point of a current baseball Dynasty?
Nobody can answer thi question, because nobody really knows who the "greatest" anything is. It's just an opinion.
I think Mike Tyson is the greatest boxer I've ever seen, but whos to say Riddick Bowe wouldnt have knocked him out if they fought in lets say...1993. maybe Bowe is the greatest, and of course some clowns would say Holyfield or Lewis aswell.
Are we talking about longevity? Because if we are the best pitcher is Nolan Ryan and the best hitter is Hank Arron. i dont think anyone saw babe Ruth play on this board.

Even though this is the "Old School" forum, I think the greatest players I have seen are both currently active.
I can't think of another player as complete as Barry Bonds, and I've never seen a pitcher as dominating as Pedro Martinez - especially in this so-called "lively ball" era.
Johnny Bench was my childhood hero, however, so I'll never admit to another catcher being anywhere near as good - although Ivan Rodriguez is pretty damn impressive.

Another vote for Donnie Baseball. My god, I wore a Donnie Mullet for 3 years hoping I could hit like hit like the greatest Yankee I ever saw. They just showed his Yankeeography again last night, and I cried 4 separate times during it, because nobody loved the Yankees when they sucked, but those of us that did loved them for Mattingly. Jeter is great, but maybe it's because I"m older, but I'll never feel the attachment I did to Mattingly.
I"ve been to a lot of concerts and sporting events, but the top two moments I've ever witnessed are
2. Mattingly being introudced in game 1 at the Stadium versus Seattle. All that time waiting and deserving the post season, and that was the second loudest cheer I ever heard. The first was....
1. Don Mattingly's Home Run in game 2 of the Seattle series. Talk about pandemoneum. I CONFIDENTLY say that Giambi could hit a grand slam in the bottom of the 9th down by 3 runs in the world series against the Mets next year and still not touch that crowd. It was like we all hit that homerun, and the love was there and it was real.
Long live Donnie Baseball. There wouldn't have been 4 World Series since 96 without the leadership Donnie provided before that.
He belongs in the Hall, Donnie forever!!!!
Bon Jovi Fan Since Day ONE!
Johnny Bench was my childhood hero, however, so I'll never admit to another catcher being anywhere near as good
Bench was great no doubt but I was partial to Carlton Fisk during those years. I also had tremendous respect for Thurmon Munson.
For all-time great catchers you have to add Yogi Berra and Roy Campanella to that list.

Mattingly was a great ballplayer to watch. It breaks my heart that he never got to get a World Series ring, and I'm a die hard Mets fan. He was just the type of player baseball was about back in the day.
Still, I'll have to say Nolan Ryan. I'm still amazed at how great he was even at the end of his career.
See Ya!

If Tony Oliva of the Twins had better knees I'm sure he would have hit .400.
