I always heard this legend about how wearing glasses makes your vision actually worse...I wear contacts now, but wondered if that was true or not...?

SUNNDOGGY8 - Of course not.

Does a pacemaker make your heart weaker?

Any change in your ability to get along w/o your glasses, is due to the loss of acclimitization of coping with bad vision. If you did w/o glasses for a while, you're adaptive skills would return - but you'd still have the crappy vision you started with (plus the normal worsening w/aging)

When you wear glasses you do
see better but it does have a
down side of in fact making
your vision worse because you
use the glasses as a crutch,
that is why you always have to
keep getting stronger

CYYYFYYY - Sorry, but I beg to differ.

The glasses don't make your eyes worse. You become reliant on them to see, thus losing whatever adaptations you previously made in surviving w/o them.

There is a HUGE difference. Think of it like this. If a blind guy suddenly became sighted, he would eventually lose the skills he gained from being deprived of his sight. These adaptations whould no longer be adaptive to him.

However, if he lost his vision again, after a time, the other senses would again grow in their abilities to compensate for the missing sense.

There have been several fascinating books written on this topic. Anyone remember the names? I'd heartily recomned them.

BTW, eyesight waxes and wanes with age. Something to look forward too. This has nothing to do with glasses, as is amply evidenced by the fact that it affects both people who wore glasses since early childhood and those who never ever wore glasses.
