i just got it on DVD the other day and was listening to the Mel Brooks commentary. Apparently, he wanted Richard Pryor to play Bart originally, which i think is pretty well known, but he also contacted John Wayne about playing the Waco Kid. Wayne read the script and thought it was a scream but he thought it was too dirty for him to be in, but said he would be among the first in line to see it.
Can you imagine if everything had gone to plan and Richard Pryor would have played alongside John Wayne? the ultimate odd couple..

I have a hard time seeing John Wayne in this scene, but damn it would be funnier.
[To two members of the KKK]
Jim (Waco Kid): Oh Boys, Lookee what I got heyuh.
Bart: Hey, where the white women at.

Pryor's a great comedian, but I don't think he would have worked out as Bart. Bart's supposed to be large and in charge, and if anything, at least as an actor, Pryor's characters don't exactly exude confidence. He's more manic than anything else...

yeah he helped write the movie, but he didnt actually act in it(the producers thought he was too unknown)
brooks says he brought him in to write all the black people scenes but it ended up that brooks wrote most of the black scenes and pryor wrote the mongo stuff..
