TV Land will be having A Mini Marathon Celebration for the 50th Birthday of the Adventure of Superman tv series tonight at 9p.m
Superman- fighter for "truth, justice and the American Way"-is the quintessential superhero, enduring since the 1940s as one of the most widely recognized pop-cultural icons. With a low budget throughout its production, The Adventures of Superman had a campy charm distinct to its era. In the beginning, the show was relatively violent but, as the series progressed, its darker feel was replaced by humor. Behind the scenes, a low-tech Superman flew on wires and leapt tall buildings in a single bound with the help of ladders and the occasional bounce off a mattress. But no matter how simple the effects were, the show's younger audience members were so convinced that the network aired PSAs warning kids not to attempt to fly like Superman.
The show ran from 1953 to 1957, though the first episodes were shot in 1951. Subsequent incarnations of the superhero have additional polish, but the original is still more powerful than a locomotive, and a lasting example of television's Golden Age.
