Good, not great.
His best role was Pep Strebeck in "Dragnet".

"The Money Pit" is the greatest film in the history of the universe ever. Therefore, he's better than Jesus.

His best scene was in Appollo 13, when he fixed the spaceship by just punching it like the Fonz.

I gotta go with great actor...the main commands any role that he takes. Even if it is a role where he is not even speaking (CastAway). I loved him in the producing role of the mini-series "From the Earth to the Moon". Hanks has been a great advocate of the space program and for that I respect him, he also did a great job in "Saving Private Ryan"

If forced to choose between watching a Tom Hanks movie or having the meaning of life revealed to me, I'd hesitate. Then I would watch a Tom Hanks movie.

He's got the best line in "Saving Private Ryan"...the audience has to suffer through all these bullshit stories about "the boys back home", but when Damon asks Hanks to share something about his wife, Hanks' character just shakes his head and says, "no...I'm keeping that one for myself."

well, i'm going to disagree with the majority of you. I think he's an average actor at best. He's just lucky, and is handed great roles.

That doesn't make any sense. Keanu Reeves has been given his share of good and great roles, and he managaes to suck it up long and hard each time. No matter how well a role is written or how good the director is, you still need a quality actor to bring the character to life convincingly.

Keanu Reeves??? And I don't make sense.
your argument doesn't hold up because Tom Hanks is at least an average actor as i said. Keanu fucks up every role because he's a bad actor.

That was my point. Keanu was given roles with movies like "Dangerous Liasons" and "Little Buddha" and "My Own Private Idaho", "The Matrix" and even "Speed" that a better actor would have been able to do so much more with, but because Keanu is so average, he ends up turning these fantastic roles into flat, boring characters. If Hanks were just average or merely good, "Philadelphia" and "Saving Private Ryan" and "Road To Perdition" would have fallen flat on their faces. The man's performaces carried those films, and a good 95% of the films he's been in...

uh, re-read what I wrote. I don't agree that Keanu is an average actor. I stated that he was a bad actor. and i think most people would agree on that.
Hanks has talent, so he's able to do something with the roles. I just don't think he's great.
So I state, again, that you can't compare the two.

I'm not comparing the two per se, I'm just using Keanu as an example of an actor who truly has lucked into some great roles. But look at Hanks' films in the last 10 years...most of them are great or excellent or at least really good...and he's usually the lead actor in them, or at least the dramatic focal point. If he weren't great, how did so many of this films end up being great?

Hanks has not only made great roles amazing, he's made bad roles (splash, the money pit, bachelor party, joe versus the volcano) into good movies (for those that disagree with them being bad roles, picture another actor doing them)

I can find a reason to bash anyone, but Tom Hanks is untouchable. I bet even his ex-wife still likes him. The only role of his that I thought he stunk in was Bonfire of the Vanities. This was mostly because he was miscast.I think it is cool that there is a current actor who can play an everyman as well as anyone(including Jimmy Stewart) Enjoy him while you can because in 25 years you will say that they don't make actors like that anymore. <P>
