i thought you were talking about rap...in that case i would say biggie.
I don't know where this comes from. The guy had one good album, Ready to Die. I heard this underground cat on a mix tape, and I wish I knew his name, and he said "and now hip hop don't respect you less you platinum or dead." Thats so true.
if so its got to be Nas
Nas is great when he's on his game. "Illmatic" is a classic and "I Gave you Power" is, in my opinion, one of the best hip hop songs of all time. y only problem with Nas is when hes not on his game, which happens more often then not, he's just awful.
I gotta say, as far as hip hop in concerned, bet lyricit awards have to go to Rakim, Chuck D, Black Thought, Mos Def, Talib Kwelie (Listen to the song "Four Women", its amazing) El-P from Company Flow, Common and a cat that I don't think gets nearly enough credit...Redman.

Rap is easy the make good lyrics. All they do is talk over a beat that doesnt even match the beat they are talking. Its much harder to make good lyrics and try to place them in a song that isnt rap. And alot of these rappers dont even right their own stuff. I could rap einsteins therory of relativity over a shitty stolen sample and you guys would think i was great

That actually depends on how you write music, any music. Some people like myself write lyrics first then add music...others, do the reverse. Trust me, it's hard as hell.

when I meet you I'm gonna throw down some beats... I wanna see you "talk".. I wanna see you come up with some hot lyrics and rhymes like these guys do
Rap is poetry... and well Biggie... the thing about Biggie... all his songs were really free styles... they were never written down.
but as good as biggie was... welll fatty I'm sorry but I do have to say that... Tupac is up there tied with him... always used to love the flow that dog had
Rahkim... true that... mah bad that I forgot him

Whoa whoa whoa
Where do you get off juding what i listen to without knowing a thing about me.
But since you want to get into this lets go
1. Calling rap (c)rap is something my dad would say.
2. Lumping rap together as just black is absolutely ridiculous, unless of course you are racist which is what im guessing here. Why does one have to be black to listen to rap. Thats like saying whites only listen to rock music you ignorant tard.
As far as lyricist go i consider a rap musicians only since the style that they use to sing is more lyrical then most rock singers. In fact my opinion is that rockers tend more to sing songs. While rappers tend to be more lyrical in their songs, since they use hooks more then most rock music groups
But to let you know i also enjoy the following:
Sublime
Nirvana
Offspring
Pink Floyd
Bob Marley
Green Day
System of a Down
and others
In fact more rap singers listen to rock and quote them as influences then you may think, but i guess when you are to busy spouting of ignorant statements then doing research its understandable.
So dont judge me when you dont know s**t about me, you mean nothing to me, you are nothing to me. Bottom Line

The man DEFINITELY had better verses than that one to try to prove your point. usi is subjective so your opinion is completely valid, I just don't see it. I can't compare that verse to one like this.
Talib Kweli from "For women"
A daughter come up in Georgia, ripe and ready to plant seeds,
Left the plantation when she saw a sign even thought she can't read
It came from God and when life get hard she always speak to him,
She'd rather kill her babies than let the master get to 'em,
She on the run up north to get across that Mason-Dixon
In church she learned how to be patient and keep wishin',
The promise of eternal life after death for those that God bless
She swears the next baby she'll have will breathe a free breath
and get milk from a free breast,
And love beeing alive,
otherwise they'll have to give up being themselves to survive,
Being maids, cleaning ladies, maybe teachers or college graduates, nurses, housewives, prostitutes, and drug addicts
Some will grow to be old women, some will die before they born,
They'll be mothers, and lovers who inspire and make songs,
(But me, my skin is brown and my manner is tough,)
(Like the love I give my babies when the rainbow's enuff,)
(I'll kill the first muthafucka that mess with me, I never bluff)
(I ain't got time to lie, my life has been much too rough,)
(Still running with barefeet, I ain't got nothin' but my soul,)
(Freedom is the ultimate goal,
life and death is small on the whole, in many ways)
(I'm awfully bitter these days
'cuz the only parents God gave me, they were slaves,)
(And it crippled me, I got the destiny of a casualty,)
(But I live through my babies and I change my reality)
(Maybe one day I'll ride back to Georgia on a train,)
(Folks 'round there call me Peaches, I guess that's my name.)
But its al good, to each his own I guess.
Jobberrific my new best friend for mentioning EL-P of Company Flow
Yeah, Company Flow is great and El-p's solo album is fantanstic.
Oh, and Mojo
Because "Imagine" could be written by a team of retarded midgets
This might be the funniest thing I've read all day. And oh so true.
As far as not hip hop artists are concerned I gotta say Tom Waites, Paul Simon, Johnny Cash, and Prince are some of my favs.

first off jack-ass I was commenting on your original list, all rap associated.
Of course they site rock influences, who's fucking music do you think they rip-off for their "beats".
you can throw around terms like racist if you want, but you are possibly the most ignorant person I have come across on this board. calling yourself knowledged one is like someone saying "i'm smart" when, of course, you are not.

Straight up honey really I'm askin
Most of these niggaz think they be mackin but they be actin
Who they attractin with that line, "What's your name what's your sign"
Soon as he buy that wine I just creep up from behind
And ask what your interests are, who you be with
Things to make you smile, what numbers to dial
You gon' be here for a while, I'm gon' go call my crew
You go call your crew
We can rendezvous at the bar around two
Plans to leave, throw the keys to Lil Cease
Pull the truck up, front, and roll up the next blunt
So we can steam on the way to the telly go fill my belly
A t-bone steak, cheese eggs and Welch's grape
Conversate for a few, cause in a few, we gon' do
What we came to do, ain't that right boo [truuuueee]
Forget the telly we just go to the crib
and watch a movie in the jacuzzi smoke l's while you do me
if you dont' want to give he the best he's at least got the most style.
