There are the "dirty bombs" we've heard about. Additionally, a small nuclear device could be placed on a small boat or inside a shipping container. Then there are "briefcase bombs" -- several of which disappeared after the collapse of the Soviet Union. These are the "likely" threats mentioned by those who oppose missile defense efforts(which, by the way, I oppose except in an area/theater capacity).

However, I'm no expert on how the detonators for these weapons work so knowleged one's comment may be true.

Hijacked planes are hardly on the equivalence of an A-bomb.
Those so called suitcase bombs more then likely were purchased by the CIA after that collapse. Remember the collapse of the soviet union was over a decade ago, and the odds are that those bombs would have been used by now at least once.
And the likelihood of smuggling one aboard a ship container is unlikely since word has come out about the U.S. intercepting shipments of cell phones and such to al qaeda networks.
