I've always liked tons of Rock until a little ways back. Im starting to like Punk but Im vey fickled. Theres some bands I do like and many I dont. I was wondering if anybody could give me a couple bands that are some what like: AFI , 88 Fingers Louie , Lars Friedricksan and The Bastards (I like them a whole lot more than Rancid for some reason) , Sex Pistols , Rammones , Clash , and a little bit of NOFX. Anybody else I should know of like those bands?

If you like AFI check out Davey's side project Son of Sam, it's kind of a AFI/Danzig mix and it's fairly good.
Also AFI related(in a 6 degrees of seperation way) is Tiger Army and The Nerve Agents and Ohgr(One of Dave's Favorite bands.)

I don't know if anyone said The Distillers, Another Rancid related band(by marraige).

Other good bands are Oxymoron, Pennywise, The Queers and Operation Ivy, the now defunct precursor to Rancid.

If you like NOFX try Fenix TX, New Found Glory or Good Charolette. F-Minus, H20, Rise Against, Himsa Scissor Hands and the broken-up At the Drive In.

On the more Hardcore side we've got Death by Stereo, Hatebreed and THE hardcore band Sick of it All.

I know I forgot a bunch of bands, but I think everyone else got them.

Also, if anyone's interested I've got some interviews we did with Adam and davey from AFI ages ago, i'll post em if anyone wants me to.

u can't go wrong with the Sex Pistols. They are by far the best punk band ever.

OK, well SuperClerk OBVIOUSLY has NO IDEA what he is talking about. I bet hes the kinda guy whos listens to blink 182 and wears Vans and thinks hes a punk. ANYWHO, best punk band EVER=The Clash. You CANNOT say anybody is better then The Clash, it would just be a sin.

If you're looking for GOOD punk these days, have fun trying to find it. Punk's is horrible right now and thats coming from me, a guy who listened to it for years.

But there are a FEW good ones out there and they are:

Dropkick Murphys
H2O
And i'll throw in Rancid cuz i liked there first two albums.

im giving u the 3 best right there. Im not just looking up a punk index and posting it, cuz thats just lame.

Liar.

Overall, if a band is deemed "punk", and/or the band itself calls itself "punk", then they're NOT punk, and they suck.

ok...im just gonna go into a corner and try to figure that one out...

Well, it just seems a little unfair to tell someone that "these three are the only bands that matter" when they're part of a MASSIVE genre with at least dozens of bands for each kind of fan. And the most exciting, original punk was the music from the late 70's, 80's and early 90's that had no idea it was punk...anything that is conciously labelled punk or describes itself as punk is sorta missing the point. It doesn't mean they're bad...they're just not punk. Punk...at least in the classic sense, is indeed dead.

But that said, I have no problem with the bands you listed. Lots of fun, good stuff...

OK, i think I got off on the wrong foot with this thread. I didnt mean to come off like the bands i named are the best ever and the only ones you should listen to.

Me saying that the Dropkicks, H2O, and Rancid are the best punk bands today was TOTALLY opionated. Its not a fact or anything and once again, i didnt mean to come off like those 3 bands are the only ones people should look into. They're are my favorite punk bands.

The Clash and The Ramones they classify them as punk.

Well, they were...are. Whatever you want to say...but they didn't really know it at the time...they just wanted something different to all the bloated stadium rock. I mean, sure, they were called punk, but The Clash, The Buzzcocks, The Sex Pistols, The Ramones, Talking Heads, Television, all of these bands were called "punk", but outside of being fast and/or quirky, they're not all that similar...

i am really into the punk scene and didnt really want to get involved with this thread aside from posting my favorite bands because once i get started i wont shutup, but i do want to comment on a couple things.

And the most exciting, original punk was the music from the late 70's, 80's and early 90's that had no idea it was punk

couldnt agree more.

and
Punk...at least in the classic sense, is indeed dead.
i never liked it when people said "punk is dead". musically, punk has become a tool for the music industry and more and more bands come out everyday that all sound the same, and for whatever reason MTV, or whoever, labels them as "punk" (i.e. sum41, blink182, etc) and begin to exploit it into the mainstream so that hot topic and other such stores can turn a profit off what is apparently the new "punk" fashion/image and it just goes round and round in a downward spiral. its not what it used to be. i dont remember where or when but i heard a quote once it went something like "it stops being punk once everyone is doing it". that wasnt the quote but i dont remember it exactly. but when i do i'll fix it.
i realize none of that made sense but its 230am and im very sick and very tired. im sorry if you read it. i understand what you mean though mojo.

Since a lot af people mentioned Dead Kennedys as their favorites, I figured I would post this in case you weren't aware and saw they were playing near you.[quote]NOT DEAD YET DEPT. - A PUNK REUNION

It has been twenty-three years since the Dead Kennedys released their first single, "California šber Alles" (which envisioned President Jerry Brown flanked by "the suede-denim secret police"), and since their singer, Jello Biafra, ran for mayor of San Francisco (his platform called for all downtown executives to wear clown suits during business hours) and came in fourth. And it has been sixteen years since the band broke up, after playing what was supposed to be its final show, in Davis, California. "We all agreed not to carry it on, but the thing about punk rock is, it's against having a set of rules, and here we are," East Bay Ray, the band's guitarist, said. This was the other night at L'Amour, a club in Brooklyn, where the DKs, touring for the first time since 1986, were about to play a midnight show. Their re- union is incomplete, however, as Jello has been estranged from the group since 1998, when Ray and the others-the bassist, Klaus Fluoride, and the drummer, D. H. Peligro-sued him for unpaid royalties and for the rights to license their music. (Biafra has accused them of wanting to let Levi's use the song "Holiday in Cambodia" in an ad. The band denies it.) In Jello's place, they have hired Brandon Cruz, who's on loan from a band called Dr. Know.

"My involvement is controversial, obviously," Brandon said, drinking a water in an unfinished broom closet that was being used as the greenroom. "Now Jello is suing Dead Kennedys, accusing me of impersonating him and emulating his stage act. I've had death threats from fans. I've been called a scab and a trust-fund baby-because of my background, I guess." When Brandon was six years old, he began playing Eddie in "The Courtship of Eddie's Father," a sitcom that ran on ABC in the early nineteen-seventies and starred Bill Bixby as a widowed father. "Bixby was an amazing man," Brandon said. "In 1981, I did a Dick Clark special called 'Whatever Became of . . . ?,' and I showed up with green hair and he hugged me. He said, 'Are you on drugs?' and I said, 'No.' So I lied to Bill Bixby, but it was O.K."

Brandon, who has small eyes, tight skin, and short platinum hair, wanted to make it clear that, despite stories about Jello living in a large Victorian house in San Francisco while the rest of the DKs were going broke-Klaus had been driving a DHL truck-this tour is not just about money. He said, "I didn't write these lyrics, but I believe every fucking word of them."

"Surprisingly, most of the lyrics don't feel dated, because so little has changed," said East Bay Ray, who, like the other original members of the band, doesn't like to give out his age or his real name. "We took a line that goes 'When Cowboy Ronnie comes to town,' and made it 'When Cowboy George W. Bush comes to town,' but that's about it."
Ray disappeared and returned with a man and his daughter. "They were waiting in the audience, and I saw she had one of our old T-shirts," he said. "Check out this story."
The man, whose name was David Schachter (brush cut, chinos), said, "O.K., I work in a conservative financial field, but imagine it's 1981 and I'm just a kid from Queens, right? I go to Irving Plaza to see the DKs on a Friday, and I love them so much I have to see them again the next night. But I feel guilty. What, go out on Saturday night and leave the wife at home? So I stay home awhile, I give the wife a little something to remember, and then I'm out the door and at the show. And, exactly nine months later, we get Lisa."
"Hey, wow," Brandon said.

"I didn't drag her to the show tonight," David said. "She loves your music. Tell them what album you've been listening to all week."
Lisa (newsboy cap, artillery belt, dark eye shadow) said, "Dead Kennedys."
"But which album," David said hopefully. "Fresh . . . Fruit . . . ?"
"Oh, right," Lisa said. " 'Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables.' "
"Cool," R

Cruz is singing Biafa's words which were written at a specific time and place, relecting Biafra's view.

hey mojo, did you ever read the book "this band could be your life"? it talks about a lot of the bands you've mentioned... it's a good little (well, not so little) book. you might want to check it out

Bought the hardcover the day it came out. Fantastic book, for fans of indie music or otherwise, it's just excellently written. I was just happy to see some of my favorite bands of yore get some of the respectthey deserve...

Second best music book ever is "Dance of Days", all about the DC punk scene.

i never liked it when people said "punk is dead". musically, punk has become a tool for the music industry and more and more bands come out everyday that all sound the same, and for whatever reason MTV, or whoever, labels them as "punk" (i.e. sum41, blink182, etc) and begin to exploit it into the mainstream so that hot topic and other such stores can turn a profit off what is apparently the new "punk" fashion/image and it just goes round and round in a downward spiral. its not what it used to be. i dont remember where or when but i heard a quote once it went something like "it stops being punk once everyone is doing it". that wasnt the quote but i dont remember it exactly. but when i do i'll fix it.
i realize none of that made sense but its 230am and im very sick and very tired. im sorry if you read it. i understand what you mean though mojo.
im going to bed. goodnight folks.

That made complete sense. We need to chat sometime.

Wow, this thread is almost making me nostalgic for the days of my youth when there was NO FUTURE, NO FUTURE, NO FUTURE FOR (me).

A few of the old school groups that deserve a mention are: Richard Hell & the Voidoids (although Mojo nailed Television) coiners of Blank Generation; The Jam (Britain)and X (LA).

Also a nice sampler from the late '70's - early '80's is a Virgin import called the best punk album in the world... ever. Not for Hardcore fans but a pretty good mix of what was called punk in the early days. If I ever figure out how to work the peer to peer file sharing software now that I have broadband I'll throw some stuff on the hard drive.

If you can't laugh at the misfortunes of others, what can you laugh at?

Is "This Band could be Your Life" an actual writing piece or just like a synopsis of bands carreers? Like is it just an info book or actually tell views and other stuff?

It's basically a big biography, Cozmo, and each chapter is about a different indie band. It covers their careers mostly during the 80's and early 90's. Great, great book.

the best book about indie-band road life is "get in the van" by henry rollins.
also a great listen, too.
