You know what I realize...there are no more single plex movie thetres anymore. Or not too many of them either. I know of one up by me (I live in Rockland County and there is one in a town called Suffern), and that is preserved cause is a monument...but the others were driven out by the multi plex monsters, and local video rentals. But by me we used to have theatre and I would see a flick, and there was an ice cream parlor next to it, so ice cream came afterwards. Saw some quality flicks in the day. All that is in the past now...is a shame cause a theatre is as much a part of small towns as mom and pop stores. Guess I yearn for older simpler times of Rollerinks/icerinks, and singleplex theatres...
anyone else used to have singleplexes??

i think these "single-plexes" were before my time. but I think they all were run out of town by these chain theaters (Loews, General Cinimas, ect.). Its the only thing that would make sense.

Ohhh you are 100 percent right Todd...that is what killed em. But is a damn shame that they died to all these mega monsters...and the one by me, Lowes @ Palisades, is nice seating but still...it killed ALL the thetres by me.

I know of a couple in the DC metro area. Some are "cinema and draft house"-type places and the most famous (The Uptown) is the place for DC premieres.
The rest seem to have been converted to CVSes.

I was born in 78 and don't remember singlepexes,so I really can't relate with ya. However in Albany NY there is a place, Madison's that is 1 screen, plays movies for like 6 bux, and like 4 for a matinee, and holds polls asking people what classic they should bring back. Cool joint.

There's a place in Lindenhurst, LI that used to be .99 for a movie then went to $3.50 for a ticket and medium popcorn and soda. Sure you got movies 4 months after everyone had seen them at that point but who cared. It has gotten a bit more current recently showing a reguular movie at nights and kids movies during the day.

There's STILL a single plex in Kinnelon, NJ! It's the movie house I grew up in! MEADTOWN CINEMAS! It became part of the Kinmal Cinemas about 8 years ago, and it's used as an extention of the larger business. They put the movies they expect to do poorly over there.
But technically, it still is there. You can ONLY watch ONE movie in this building.

The single moviescreen theartre has gone the way of the passenger pigeon and the dodo.
Funny thing is, I didn't even think about it till now. The theatres I went to as a kid have been changed into multiplexes or converted to other uses.
I remember a place on Rockaway Turnpike near Kennedy Airport, where the tickets were just 77 cents!!! In 1978, the price skyrocketed to 78 cents, but we were made of stern stuff back then and didn't complain.
