View Full Version : Sunday Daily News Actually Prints My R+F Letter
Mike Teacher

Wow; after seeing rant after rant on how WNEW should be drawn and quartered and burned to the ground, etc. I was pleasantly surprised to get the Sunday Daily News this Morning and find this....
Opie & Anthony - not
Wall, N.J.: I am disappointed in the coverage given the Ron and Fez show in reference to its replacing Opie and Anthony as the evening-drive talk program on WNEW-FM ("Meet the new Opie & Dopey," Aug. 27).
The headline assumes the Ron and Fez show will emulate its predecessor. Anyone who has listened to Ron Bennington and Fez Whatley knows their show is nothing like Opie and Anthony's. Ron and Fez are seasoned comedy performers and social commentators. Their show is caller-driven, not driven by outrageous stunts and sex. After 9/11, they set aside the usual format to let callers vent their anger and tears. The program was an oasis in a sea of shallow shock programming. Equally misleading is the photo of the duo - at best, an outdated file photo taken long ago. And the Daily News repeatedly misspelled Ron Bennington's name.
This coverage does a disservice to them, to a station struggling to maintain a semblance of stability while being fired upon from all sides, and reflects poorly on The News.
Michael P. Black
They edited it a bit, but at least they printed an opinion that was longer than 20 words.

Great job except didn't every show set aside the usual shocking format during 9/11?

Yes, just about everyone did; for a while, then it was back to business as usual. The major differences between other shows and R+F were that they for days and days did nothing but take callers. Some shows take only a few callers an hour, R+F made sure dozens got to speak each day.

Also; R+F haven't moved on as quickly as some of the others; I believe a caller called once months later still upset and they didnt just blow them off.

I don't understand the distinction you're making between Ron and Fez amd O and A, sure Ron and Fez do more bits for their callers but I think the content of both shows is pretty much the same.

Funny how Mindtank says it's an uphill battle and his sig shows a tank going down hill.....just a little light commentary.

Hooray Mike!
I was reading the Daily News in a diner in Hoboken when I came across the article. I was so excited! I'm so glad they didn't over look it because of the "50 word" minimum.
Cheeky monkey-- you led us to believe your last name was Xxxxxx. :-)

What good, if any, the letter does, I was hoping some ron and fez fan would find it, and be psyched.
You made my day.
