Hey All-
I have a somewhat silly question for all the gamers...
what is XBOX's "rank" in the gaming world? Does it have a good reputation? Are people excited about "XBOX LIVE"??
I'm totally and completely new to the gaming world and I'm wondering what the word on the street is about the XBOX.
Thanks guys.

Well being a XBOX owner i'll tell you what i know and have heard. XBOX doesn't have the best reputation among more of casual games. People like that are either looking at a Gamecube or a PS2. XBOX had arguably the best game of 2001-Halo and is still the best game on the system. XBOX has a nice lineup this fall with games like Splinter Cell, Blinx, Pandra Dragoon Orta just to name a few. I've been pretty happy with the system but in the next year my feeling are going to go WAY up. I'd say Xbox is more of a system for a hardcore gamer and not someone who will get games and play them every once and a while. You said you're new to gaming so its your choice. Right now with Mario Sunshine out, Metroid and Zelda to come i'd say Gamecube is the system to own.

Ask yourself what you are going to use the machine for, and what games you like, and that will help you decide which console to own. If graphics are your thing, all 3 consoles deliver, although XBOX has the most power, then Gamecube, then PS2 (although all have the ability to crank out some amazing visuals). Some people have complained over the "jaggy" look of some PS2 games. That reason is because of a rendering technique called anti-aliasing. Some PS2 developers have a hard time writing their own development tools to add this into their game graphics. The PS2 has many games out that use this technique, but then again, there are plenty that suffer from a lower resolution and jaggy images from memory restrictions (PS2 has 32mb RAM while GC and XBOX have more) and the lack of these techniques.
PS2 has the most games (it's PS1 backwards compatible) and largest fan base and participating group of developers. Gamecube has a long-standing tradition of family-friendly games, and you'll see plenty of Mario and Super Monkeyball type games. There are some Mature rated games out for it, so don't get turned off if you like more violent fare. If you like old school gaming with great graphics, Gamecube is a good choice. XBOX has a lot of PC developers making games for them because essentially the XBOX is a slimmed down PC with some good harware under the hood. There are more and more games coming out for XBOX, so time will tell how their software library will expand.
If you want a DVD player, both the PS2 and XBOX have ample hardware to play back movies. PS2 works better with the $20 remote kit although it's not necessary. XBOX cannot play movies without the extra remote package (I think it's $30).
Pricewise, PS2 and XBOX are both $199. GC is $149. Games seem to be a little cheaper a little sooner for XBOX, but now PS2 has it's Greatest Hits line, which is rapidly growing and making the games more affordable.
All 3 systems have their strengths and weaknesses, but in all they are all worth considering. I bought the PS2 because I wanted to play my old PS1 games, as well as watch movies. Plus there's a Linux kit out for it, but unless you're a hardcore Unix guy, it's not worth buying.
All 3 systems are broadband capable now (or will be soon in Nintendo's case).
I hope this long-winded diatribe didn't put you to sleep, and was of some use. Good luck and happy gaming.
:)

Thanks everyone.
I have to fess up. To be honest, I'm not into gaming at all, but the company I work for is launching XboxLIVE on November 15th and I'm trying to predict what the anticipation level is (or what it will be).
Microsoft has faith that XboxLIVE will cahnge the face of gaming as we know it and I was wondering if they're dead on, or out of their minds.
I've seen the new games and the (supposed) capacity of XboxLIVE and if it does everything they say it's going to do, they might be right! But (keep in mind that I'm not a gamer) I know that the buzz is that Xbox isn't the greatest because of the lack of titles and that old clunky controller (which they've discontinued).
If you guys have any thoughts on XboxLIVE, lemme know. I'd love to hear what the normal people think of it.

the only reason i'd buy an xbox is for the DOA games, especially the volleyball one coming out. besides having a lot of the hardware of a PC, it also has a lot of the problems of a PC. i've heard of freezing, and overheating. even some overheating to the point of starting fires. on top of that the first line of games didnt really impress me. although now xbox may turn out not that bad with some of the titles i've seen on the way. as for right now, PS2 and gamecube are far better.

Xbox is supposed to be coming out with over 200 games from now untill Christmas and just the future HALO games are good enough a reason to get x-box
and the overheating only happened very early on, and that was because they were originally(and brilliantly) manufactured without fans in them
a little fire never hurt anyone anyway

DOA3 was a good fighting game and the new volleyball game will be......um inpressive. But in no way is that the only reasons. Halo alone is enough reason, then with Halo Next, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Blinx, Splinter Cell, there are some good games coming out. I don't know what you're talking about.
