Invention paves way for house made of sewage bricks
A team of researchers in Taiwan have invented a house brick made with sludge from sewage works.
They say the brick is a good way of using up waste in countries where there is a shortage of landfill space.
The I-Shou University team added industrial effluent to the bricks, but say domestic sewage works just as well.
Chih-Huang Weng and his team say bricks don't smell and the firing process locks away any toxins and hazardous materials.
They admit members of the public may still need some convincing to live in a house of sewage 'biobricks'.
New Scientist reports details of the invention will appear in the journal Advances in Environmental Research.
Weng and his team achieved the best results when sewage made up 10% of the material in clay bricks fired at a temperature of 900 degrees Centigrade. The process still worked when the bricks contained 30% sludge.
