I cant take it anymore.

My mom is driving me crazy. I need to get out on my own. I'm probally going to get a full time job (while going to school part time) saving money to attain this.

Any advice on what to accept in looking for and paying for apartments?

If you become a waitress you can make 50 buck alone a night.Especially when you flirt with a customers. Apartments ushally look at yearly salarys to determine if you can afford the aparment. Start finding a room mats.

Its pretty cold in here.......

Make sure the landlord pays for heat and hot water. Most do, mine doesn't and it costs me a shitload to heat the place in the winter.

Don't take an apartment anywhere near your landlord (mine lives in the house next to me and watches everything i do).

The guidelines are supposed to be the rent shouldn't be more than 1/4 of your monthly salary, however, I have determined that that is BS. Everyone I know pays at least 1/3 of thier salary for rent (I pay 1/2 of mine for my place)

Also factor in costs for electric, phone, cable (These cost me $250/month).

Good luck, its fun having your own place, but fuckin expensive too :)

Go grocery shopping! Don't be a moron like me and order out 5 nights a week. Also do the dishes. They really start to smell after a few weeks.

If the landlord demands the rent be paid in small, non-sequential bills, pass on that place. Also, if you also notice a cockroach playfully carrying a cat in its mouth, that place probably has bugs, dude.

Actually read the lease agreement. Too many people wind up signing something that they don't read.

You may wind up selling your soul that way.

The sooner the better Lent. Plus, then you can have as many parties as you want. Seriously, try to get one where the gas is paid by the landlord. Oh yea, and watch out for white people. Y'know how it is, they fuck up everything.

Moving out is a big thing. You find out real fast that many of the things you took for granted suddenly become expensive and not so easy. It's tough to find an affordable place AND roommates you can handle and can live with you. You may learn you CAN live without cable...hehe

That being said, it's a great challenge and can help you get your act together. You now have steady bills and responsibilities you can't neglect or put off on others. Just make certain you have a steady job and some savings before you jump into some new place.

Well where are good places to move in the NY area. I particuarly want to stay near queens or long island.

I'll probablly live without cable and or internet for now and since i dont drink there some money saved.

I heard its wise to save a months rent in addition to security and deposit.

I've started to initally look and found places for $500 in queens.

Then it's probably a shithole.
Average for queens in a nice neighborhood is $700-800.
Nassau, for a basement apartment you'd be looking at $900-1500 a month, depending on where and how big.

If you live in NYC when you get your first paycheck you will be shocked to see how much tax is taken out. I actually cried when I saw my first check. My first few years in Manhattan over 1/2 of my check went to rent and utilities. I have never lived anywhere in NYC where the landlord paid utilities. Save up as much money as possible before making the leap. You will have more expenses than you think. And good luck. Like the song says, If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere... <P>

There are few things like seeing how much the government takes out of your paycheck to make you say "Tax cut? Hey, maybe those Republicans have a point." LOL

If you have 500-600 dollars for a place, you're either looking for a room in a place where you share bathroom/kitchen and such (almost like a dorm), or you might have to consider finding a room share situation...all the more so as you move closer to the city.
