GLENOMA -- A Fife man has drowned while fishing on the Cowlitz River, the Lewis County Sheriff's Office said.
Silas J. Nell, 63, had been camping with his family near Riffe Lake when he borrowed his brother-in-law's 12-foot boat Saturday.
Several hours later, other anglers reported the empty boat about a half-mile upstream from where Nell was last seen, Chief Criminal Deputy Joe Doench said.
Doench said a lawn chair and fishing tackle were found in the river Saturday.
Search-and-rescue divers did not find Nell until Sunday, when his body was recovered in about 15 feet of water 50 feet offshore.
"It appears at this time that Mr. Nell was seated on a lawn chair in the boat, which was not permanently affixed, and we believe that due to the instability of the chair, he fell from the boat," Doench said.
