Radio To-Do Hits Viacom's Shares


Shares of Viacom dropped 4 percent Friday and were down an additional 2.4 percent in mid-morning trading today (Monday) after the company announced that it had fired New York shock jocks Opie and Anthony, who reportedly brought in as much as $30 million a year in ad revenue for Viacom's Infinity Broadcasting unit and Infinity-controlled Westwood One syndication company. The decision to fire the two jocks and indefinitely suspend the manager and program director of WNEW-FM followed the airing of a show that purportedly described a sex act as it was occurring in St. Patrick's Cathedral. Press reports said that the decision was made by Viacom President Mel Karmazin, who himself had managed the station in the 1970s and '80s when it was owned by Metromedia.

I think I have read the "opie and Dopey" quote like 10 times...these reporters are pathetic. In every class I have ever had on journalism I was taught two things which were penned as the most important things. 1) Never repeat headlines, always be original with your stuff.
2) be un bais...you are suppossed to report the news with out any twists on it. I guess the daily news and the post do not hire college grads huh?

I only read the Daily News one. Actually, I think it was great advertising and really a funny picture of the guys. The only thing I found offensive in the article was the Opie and Dopie thing - everything else wasn't bad.

I didn't think that picture could get funnier and then POW! the magic of animation. Here is my 2 cents. O and A have been going down hill since syndication. The talent of the show (Anthony) talked half as much since Norton came on full time. They were like sports stars when they sign big contracts, got lazy and took the easy road until it jumped up and bit them in the ass. Ron and Fez have been consistently funnier for the last year. Actually, I realized the problem with the whole situation: WNEW hired away John Mainelli. The guy used to do Radio Columns for the Post (or was it the Daily News? Same difference) and he got everything right cause he has half a brain. Now that he's gone, Paul Mecurio is STILL a producer (even when they are reporting comments he made AT A COMEDY SHOW), the Radio Chick is a Shock Jock, and Ron was named after a small boarding school in NJ.
