I ran to the local video store and rented "The Swinging Stewardesses".
It was awful.
I later rented "Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice" and freeze-framed Natalie Wood in her purple panties.
Priceless.

My first movie was this BMX moving called RAD.. it was so kewl.. hahah i think was even a beta tape...not vhs...haaaaa
i found a review of it on imdb.com
Summary: Good classic 80's movie, a niche movie for BMXer's
RAD has quite a following among older BMXer's even until this day. The reason for this
is simple, the movie was one of the best BMX movies of the 80s. In fact, it was one of
the few, the only other "big" BMX movie I can think of is BMX Bandits, and well, that
movie just wasn't quite as good. RAD is based on a story of a small town BMXer that
goes up and competes against nationally known BMXers who have big sponsers behind
them (Mongoose, GT, etc.) and wins. RAD has many good points to it, including:
Stunts, Music and the normal 80's love story. As for the stunts, the movie has a cast of
some pro bmx riders and both the intro and credits to the movie are just about 4-5
minutes of freestyle riders showing off, not a bad way to start a movie if you ask me.
RAD has bike stunts/races throughout, starting with the intro, then Cru and his friends
delivering papers to local businesses/residents, then the Cru/Christian show at the
Helltrack Dance, and the main race/credits with various other stunts thrown in here and
there. As for the Music, well the only big song was "Send Me An Angel" which was
done by "REAL LIFE", an aussie band whose albums are generally hard to find in the
US. The Soundtrack for RAD is even harder to find than the movie itself is now, as I
have seen used copies of the movie selling for $20-$40, but have not seen one copy of
the Soundtrack selling. The normal 80's love story is between Cru Jones (Bill Allen) and
Christian (Lori Loughlin) and has the normal lover's spat/make up.
All in all, RAD is one of the best Bike/BMX/Freestyle movies ever made. It seems as
though RAD and Thrasher (a Skater movie which has always made me think of RAD
with it's major similarities) will always be remembers by the BMXer's and Skaters from
the 80s. It's a shame that both the Movie and the Soundtrack are out of print.

Great post Heckler, I can not remember my first rental. But I did rent a lot of the old cult films from the 60's.
Did you ever rent any of the sleazemania films. They were trailers of all of the old exploitation films.
I rented a lot of the John Waters movies.
Great small movie "Amazon women on the moon"

For a slumber party, we rented "Gremlins" and "The Munchies", which were scary movies when you're 7 years old.

People stared at you when you came out. Local video store had saloon doors going into the porn section. When you went in or out they squeaked like hell so you couldn't even sneak in. <P>

I remember being 4 or 5 and riding on the back of my dad's motorcycle to return videos. We passed my mom on the way(lived on a dead end street) and I blurted out, "Yeah, we're returning some videos!". My dad cut me off and told her we were just going for a ride then told me under his breath to shut up.
I don't know if he fucked me while he watched the pornos, but I do know that I have found myself in the same situation 1000 times; one where I tell the truth when lying is expected.

Transformers the Movie is actually the answer to both questions. I rented that VHS practically every other weekend when I was a kid. The first thing I did after buying a PS2 was go to Amazon and order both Transformers the Movie and Season 1 of the show.

Star Wars, and that was back when it was a common practice for video rental places to charge membership fees, at least it was that way in Central NJ in the early-mid 80s. My pops had to drop like $80 on a lifetime membership after spending something like $400-$600 on a VCR. I remember that shitty store always had the Martian Chronicles with Rock Hudson & it made me giggle even back then.
As far as DVDs go, I bought 5 or 6 at the same time I bought my first player, I remember having Mallrats, Jaws & Cobra. I was obsessed with how fucking awful Cobra was at the time...

I did the same when I was a kid, recently re-watched and forgot how brutal it was when Optimus Prime dies, then gets robot rigor mortis and turns all gray... Fabulous soundtrack, though.
