Should 9/11 Be a Holiday?
no
arent holidays for happy stuff, like christmas and easter. would they call it "september 11th day"
exactly, and then it'd turn into a big commercial thing with sales and shit on that day.
is there a pearl harbor attack day? not really, little is done nationwide to recognize what happened then.
i have no problem doing something like hanging a flag half mast on that day or something, but having a day off would taint any sort of rememberance

I don't think so. But if they do make it one it should be for a long time because people will get too upset.

9/11 shouldn't be a holiday. Its too tragatic to be one. Holidays are days in whih greeting cards and/or gifts can be given. no matter what you say, it would be horrific if it is capitalized on by industrial american and Halmark..

I don't think that would be a good idea...that would be like making Dec 7, the day Pearl Harbor got attacked an holiday. Holidays are supposed happy events not sad ones.
YO! DOES A RETARD?.. I DON'T THINK SO

If it were a holiday I would hope it would be something like Heroes of America day, to honor those that put their lives in danger in order to save ours..kinda like Memorial Day but for non-military people. I think if it were called Heroes of America day there would be reflections and masses, not a day of gifts and celebration, rather a day of remembrance and honor. If it were that kind of holiday, then yes, I think it is perfectly fine.

Nope. It fits right in with Memorial Day. Making the day itself a holiday will just lead to MORE commercial misuse of 9/11.

I would be okay with 9/11 as a "solemn day of remembrance", with little or no business open and an emphasis on spending time with loved ones

no holiday period. people will remember this for a long time and television won't let us forget it, b/c it gives them a chance to do over the top specials and bump their ratings.
besides if i ever run into an american who says "what happened then?" i swear i'm gonna run a flagpole up their ass and ship him or her off to cuba with a sign that says "fuck castro"

i don't think it should be so much a holiday, but more of a day of mourn and rememberance. For this year though, I think the entire city should shut down for one day. No TV, radio, business, etc. Just for the one year anniversary. I know that it will not happen because the city and country will lose too much money. But I think it would be nice just for that one day that we all forget about everything and remember and mourn the thousands of people who died.

I absolutely think that 9/11 should become a national holiday.
I am of the opinion that 9/11 should forever be known as "Innocent's Day." This way it doesn't have to always be a blaring flashback of the towers falling, and everyone fearing for their security and lives, but better as a day to remember ALL of those innocent people who have lost their lives before their time.
Above all, this has been the defining moment of our generation, if not in the the history of our nation. This day should not be forgotten for a slew of reasons.

No. It was a very tragic event and, it will just become another day for "markdown sales at your local Macy's". Like Pearl Harbor, people should memorialize in their own way.

ABSOLUTELY 100% NOT!
If we decide to stop our entire country for that day, the cliche of "the terrorists winning" really does come true.

No. The meaning of "holidays" gets lost-- store sales, 3-day weekends.
9/11 was the only modern-day attack on the mainland (meaning, Pearl Harbor, aside). Let's face it-- we were lazy and complacent. The Clinton administration let too much shit happen. That attack was an afront to our way of life. Maybe I'm being way, way TOO conservative (and tell me if I am), but I see nothing wrong with a voluntary moment of silence at 8:49 every 9/11.

The Clinton administration let too much shit happen.
While I actually agree with this statement, is there a further implication? I don't think for the slightest second that if Bush had been back for a second term or Dole had been running things that we would have been anymore prepared for domestic terrorism after the first Trade Center bombing, Oklahoma City, OR the African embassy attacks. Has everyone forgotten how OPPOSED the general public opinion was to the airstrikes we launched after the embassy bombings? And why does everyone easily ignore the massive and rampant budget increases Clinton gave to the millitary? I think in his first term alone he tossed out at least a good 30-40 billion...
