check out this gem from the New York Radio Message Boards....
***With all the controversy over O&A and trash-talk in general, I decided to take another listen to WNEW today, since I very rarely listen to any trash-talk radio.
Don & Mike did a bit (a repeat show) where they sent some kid from southern Florida, who was supposedly a racist, to some of the reputed worst neighborhoods in NYC, such as Harlem, the Bronx and East New York in Brooklyn. The kid claimed he was going to reveal a Confederate flag at each of these locations.
I heard the segment in East New York. Egged on by Don, Mike and someone who was probably a show regular, they had this kid believing he was under attack from every Black or Hispanic person nearby.
The implied message was that no white person could survive a visit to any of these neighborhoods and that everyone in these areas was either a violent gang member, a crackhead or a prostitute.
The show regular said he knew an area a few blocks away where under-age prostitutes congegrated and that he was going to get this kid a "HJ".
Aside from the implicitly racist nature of the broadcast, hasn't Infinity learned anything? Once again, show hosts were supporting and encouraging illegal behavior (the hiring of under-age prostitutes, for those of you who couldn't figure that out.)
(Although since the GM and PD are on suspension, I guess there was no one left to review the content of the repeat show to determine if it was appropriate to be on the air.)
Later in the day, I heard a repeat of O&A, in which they took a call from a hysterical woman who was upset by their disrespectful treatment of women.
She was told more than once to shut her hole.
They asked her if she had kids. She told them she had two daughters, ages 5 and 7.
Either Opie or Anthony told her that when those kids turn 18, guys exactly like Opie and Anthony "would F them in the A really hard!"
Regardless of whether this is legal or not, does this represent the programming of a responsible broadcaster? This is what happens when we have a totally free market and stations do not have to operate in the public interest.
And that's aside from the fact that you would think that Infinity would be a little bit more careful about their programming until this O&A matter blows over.***
