Tonight on MSNBC, they asked "Who would be the 5th president you would put on Mt. Rushmore?" I would put Reagan. Come on, he won the Cold War and proved we were still willing to fight communism after Vietnam.

The four Presidents on Mt. Rushmore were chosen because their terms were turning points for the country (Washington - first pres, Jefferson - Louisiana Purchase, Lincoln - Civil War, Teddy Roosevelt - America reaching overseas, conservation), so the next one would probably be FDR for obvious reasons, though you could argue Wilson, since under his term the country entered WWI.

He also expanded the size of the Federal government (starting with creating the Executive Office of the President) and created the welfare state in America.

What about Eisenhower? His supreme command of the troops in Europe to topple Hitler, plus an unprecedented period of prosperity, plus the seeds of the civil rights movement. He sent troops into Little Rock to enforce integration in schools. Sounds like a perfect candidate to me.

Vietnam was a justified and misunderstood war. It is unfortunate that nearly 60,000 Americans died in a land they would never otherwise see, but they did it defending freedom and democracy. If we want to point blame at presidents for the Vietnam war, Johnson mishandled it from day 1.

Gotta throw my vote in for FDR as well. I disagree with what ended up being a far too bloated Federal government, but the man worked so hard to pull us out of the Great Depression and World War II that it killed him. Plus he was a great social activist, he accomplished everything while being essentially crippled, AND he managed to have multiple mistresses on the side. Go Franky.
And if Reagan goes up there, I'm blowing the damn thing up. I'm actually not a hater of the guy, but the push to get him on monuments around the country is insane. There's a group trying to get a Reagan monument of some kind in every American state and every NATO country. MADNESS. The guy was decent, but like the current Prez, what was accomplished during his years was more the result of the insanely experienced people he had around him.
Worst choice would be Grant. Or Wilson. Yech.

Grant wasnt that bad of a president. He's a lot like what bush would be if he hadnt surrounded himself with smart people. Grant had to deal with a country still hurt from a 4 year war and unscrupulous businessmen ran all over his administration...
basically, he trusted too many people..he shoulda done what sherman did and stayed out of politics

And Nixon pounded the North into submission and leveled VC hideouts in Cambodia. Love him or hate him, there is no question that he handled the war better than any of his predecessors.
Also, Eisenhower pledged support for Diem and Kennedy supported Diem's overthrow. It was that move by Kennedy that truly dedicated America to the Republic of South Vietnam, in my opinion.
There are other factors that caused Saigon to fall. The leftist Americans who protested (and terribly misunderstood) the war certainly share some blame. The Congress that denied last-minute weapons sales to the ARVN probably takes the most blame. As much as I dislike the stance that each of these groups took, it showed that their voices WERE heard and this war WAS justified because we were fighting for the same right in Southeast Asia.

We lost the war simply because we were trying to smash a housefly with a Cadillac. The American millitary just wasn't properly guided, trained, or equiped to effectively deal with a long-term guerrilla conflict.
And was it really that justified? It was just the blanket, holdover notion that "communism will destroy us all!" Vietnam was actually pretty anti-everything in terms of China and the USSR and the U.S.A drove them into their waiting arms...
Oh well, it was a fucked-up conflict on a number of levels...

Communism was vicious to the welfare of Southeast Asians. Pol Pot's communist regime in Cambodia killed 1 out of every 3 Cambodians. One of the arguments against America's involvement in the war was that we were trying to "colonialize" Vietnam. Even if this was true, Vietnam turned around and occupied Cambodia and Laos and continues a puppet regime in Laos to this day.
Some said the Saigon regimes were power-hungry, corrupt and unpopular. This was slightly true, but it was far more fair, democratic and free than any communist country mankind has ever seen.

But Kinison was explaining that he was up to his knees in rice paddies, etc. when Rodeny Dangerfield interrupted him.
Let's leave it at this; Defending Vietnam was far more worthwhile and justified than defending Kuwait. But for whatever reason, defending an absolute monarchy is more popular than defending a genuine republic.
