Perhaps the Moderators will be kind enough to allow this thread for a little while.

I call in often to Ron and Fez, and have written a few bits for them. I'm trying to build up some practice in answering online questions to get some writing ideas.

Anyway; I teach High School science; and if there's any weird, puzzling, stupid, intelligent, whatever, question thats burning inside you; feel free to ask it here and I will do my best to answer it.

Life; Relationships; Art; Science; Radio; Politics; TV; and everything and anything else you can think of ask away.

Again, thanks in Advance to the MODS for letting this thread run for a while.

Wow; an awesome question!
Well technically, we ARE traveling through time, at the rate of 1 second every second. Sounds obvious but that's actually what's happening. It does seem, and we've shown this with experiments, that the faster something travels; the slower time is relative to something not traveling as fast. The Thought experiment goes like this: You get in a rocket ship and zoom around space very very fast [close to the speed of light]. You keep a clock on you. You travel for what YOUR clock say is a year. Since you're moving very fast compared to Earth, time is slowing down for you.
So, you land after a year on your clock, and when you get out of your space ship on earth; depending on how fast you were going, it may be several years, or even decades, or even centuries later on earth [remember Planet of the Apes?]. So, with technology to get fast enough we Could travel into the future. This is called Time Dilation and was part of Einstein's relativity theory.
Travel into the past? No one really know for sure on that one, and the

A shoehorn is neither a show or a horn emplain

A: The Etymology of shoehorn, they think, is from Shoe-ing horn, a device for shoeing animals. Perhaps it was horn shaped. Some of these questions will be answerd with the famous "Nobody Really Knows" answers. A copout perhaps, but we, in 2002 still don't know a whole lot about many things, like how the brain works and whether fish get thirsty.

I have a question why do men have nipples

Mike Teacher
08-19-2002, 08:26 PM
ok i have a question why do men have nipples A: OK, its like this.

Simplying things massively, all womens eggs are "X": we'll call that 'female'. Half of men's sperm carry the X chromosome: half the Y. If an X sperm gets to the egg first: you get XX = female. If a Y sperm gets there first: you get XY = male. When these meet: you are a single cell: called a zygote, the cell divides, 1-2-4-8....

Now cells start to differentiate, ie. becoming nerve cells, eye cells, skin cells and so on. And at one point, the clump of cells turns on the XX or XY part that determines what sex it will be. BUT that part doesnt happen until After the cell has already started producing cells for developing mammary glands aka breasts/nipples/milk producing cell etc. So the nipple blueprint has been laid out before the cell starts making the major plans for whatever sex its going to be. Female embryos continue developing the cells for what will eventually be the whole breast/nipple/milk producing thing: Male embryos [and adults] are just stuck with the nipple part. Again, this is massively simplified: my apologies. But hey....

A1: I have no idea; except to say the Internet is one of the most addicting things ever invented. People can lead pretend lives of fantasy, pretend to be who they are not, and insult each other with immunity. For me, insults are for the weak; people need to disagree without being disagreeable. A2: Recycling is one of those things where you have un-intended consequences. The energy taken to recycle is ending up more than the cost and materials saved by doing the actual recycling. Instead of recycling; I'd say we have to lessen the amount of materials used in packaging; my DVD purchase has the Big Plastic Thing Security Device; Plastic Shrinkwrap; 3 different Strips of sticky stuff that seals the box; and 2 or 3 plastic/metal security strips to set off alarms. That's quite a waste for a DVD. Another example: They said computers would eliminate paper; but those very computers are pumping out paper at a rate never before seen by humans. Mike

A: Good one. Well were at 6 billion humans and growing. That's 5 people born a second. 2 people die a second [these are averages of course], so you can see some serious birth control needs to be done to decrease the birth rate. That will help.

The earth now has enough food to feed 6 billion; its the unequal distribution of those resources that cause the hunger and lack of things. We sit here on out computers; half of the people on the planet have never seen a telephone, a computer, or have used a flush toilet. We need to address that.

Why is the Teacher's Union so adamant about protecting bad teachers through the refusal of merit bonuses for those teachers whose students actually perform above average? I believe that teachers should make more money than they currently do, however don't reward the bad teachers just because they are in the union. If students (en masse) are not responding to a teacher's approach - kick the teacher to the curb. By the same example, if a teacher's class is performing admirably or showing marked improvement - GIVE 'EM A GODDAMN BONUS!

A: I agree with much of what you say. The teacher's union [the NEA], like most unions, was formed with good intentions; to protect the worker from injustices. Sadly, the NEA, and many unions have evolved into giant influence peddling entities that use the money teacher's pay to further the 'agenda' they wish to push. Tenure? Started out as, again, a way to protect teachers against an administrator who didn't like the teacher and/or his style of teaching. But now, as you said, tenure often keeps in some really bad teachers. Imagine you sell cars, and get Tenure, and you just decide to sell 2 cars a month instead of 20. Why keep this guy? Why make it so difficult to fire him? For me; I don't need tenure; if I'm good, I'm good. If I stink; best I look elsewhere for a career.

Teachers Pay: This is a controversial one. It took me a Masters degree and 4 years of teaching before I cracked $30,000 salary in 1995. Now some will argue teacher only work for 185 days. Correct. We also only get Paid for 185 days. My teachers contract is for 10 months work; July and August? I dont work. I also earn nothing, and must get another job.

Others say teachers only work 6 hours a day. Well; the school day is indeed about that long. During those 6 hours a teacher will usually have 8 periods. 5 periods of teaching, 1 period for lunch, 1 period for a 'duty' [can range from hall duty to mentoring students to work in the office, etc.], and 1 Prep. That Prep period, 45 minutes a day is for the following:

Writing lesson for 5 classes [they may not all be the same; I may teach 1 physical science; 2 Biologies, and a Chemistry]; writing the handouts for the classes, making the copies of the handout, making the homework; grading the homework. Making tests; grading tests; entering homework/test/quiz/participation grades. Giving extra help. seeing students about missed work. And more.

Now if you can do that in 45 minutes a day; super. I cant. I spend hours a day doing the above. I'm not bitching about it at ALL; i'm just trying to show that I do not work a 6 hour day. Not even close.

Merit pay for good work? I'd love it, if I deserve it. But problems arise with how to measure who gets how much and why.

I have a few hundred other things to say on this. But I'm gonna keep this already long response as short as possible.

Anyone feel free to agree, disagree on the above. Thats exactly why I started the Topic.

Do you think the public education system might not exist at the rate its going now? My mom thinks so.

Man these are good questions.

The quick answer is No; the public education system can no longer do what it's original aim was: to give an education to the students.

Where to place the blame? Well, its the schools fault. And it's socities fault. And it's the student's fault. And it's the Teacher's fault. And My fault.

Schools: See my other post on some of these issues.

Society: No one loves America as much as I do. Having said that, i'll paraphrase George Carlin and say: Its a great country but a weird culture. Education is not a very high priority for many. This is not a sin; it is a Crime. Now for me; the most important part of our society above all, are our children. When a society fails to provide for the welfare, safety, and education a child deserves to become a literate, critically thinking educated person, that society has just died. But there is hope.

Students and parents: On a daily basis, they amaze me. Too often they amaze me for the wrong reason; they really just don't put a high priority on education. Of course for some parents, they don't have the time to spend helping educate their kids. For a willing parent, the frustration is horrific.

Parents and students also amaze me in that so many really want to learn, and the parents could not be more supportive!

For me, my aim is simple. I honestly don't care if the students remember and learn everything in my chem. class. When I took Chem in high school; I hated it. But my one wish is too impart in my students a love of learning, and a realization that learning never ends. A child with the desire to learn can't help but to learn!

Again, I have so much more to say, but bandwidth is at a premium, and the Moderators are already being WAY too kind to me.

You mentioned before that birth control would *help* world hunger. So, in other words, obviously you think population control in any form would also greatly improve the quality of life in general (food, water, clothes, shelter) for these people.
So are you saying the holocaust was a good thing and people living the good life today possibly have Hitler to thank for such good fortune? And if so, do you think the starving people of the world should be praying for another Holocaust?

If you set a Slinky goin on an UP escalator... where will it go? Up or down?

A: Both. And Neither.

This is about relative motion. To a person standing still on the escalator [lets pretend its a really looooong escalator]; they will watch the escalator pass them going down.

A person standing still, watching the escalator from the side, the steps are going up.

If the slinky is going down at the same speed the escalator is going up. the same person watches a slinky neither rising nor falling; just doing its slinky thing in the same place.

So its: Slinky relative to steps = going down. Escaltor steps = going up. And slinky relative to an outside observer = staying in place.

I believe I said 'Birth Control' and not Population control. I'd like to see a reduction in the rate of births, NOT the reduction of already living people.

The Holocaust was, for me, an abomination and a crime against humanity. And Holocausts continue today.

Hope I cleared this up.

Can you be a devout believer in god and religion AND science? how do you reconcile sceince, big bang, evolution and The biblical version?

A1: I see no conflict between a belief in a god and science. But first, lets define some things....

Science a way of doing things and a body of knowledge. The way of doing things is called the scientific method, but i dislike that phrase because it sounds like only scientists use it. we all use it constantly.
Now for "God". It's my experience that god is different for just about everyone. There are hundreds of religions on earth and as many gods. For simplicity let's stick with the Judeo-Christian god. Well, there seems that there are different levels of belief. Some believe God exists [theists]. Some don't [atheists]. Some aren't sure [Agnostics]. I'm simplifying here for the sake of space.
Now with believers there are levels too; some follow some parts of the bible/torah, and some [literalists] believe the Bible to be the exact, literal way things are.

Where is all of this going? Well what I'm trying to say is can a person reconcile God and Evolution and Science and the Big Bang? It depends on the person. Some atheists won't even entertain the possibility of God; the universe is here, no God created it, and the stars, planets, and life on earth all evolved from the matter/energy created in the Big Bang.

Some Literalists will have nothing to do with the above. God created the world in 6 days, the animals are here in place as they were when God created them, and Humans arose after Adam and Eve started gettin' it on. For them, I don't see how they can ever reconcile the findings of science that disagree with the Bible. For them, science, if it doesn;t agree with the bible, is mistaken.

Me personally? I believe both in evolution and some form of God. For me God isn't a human-type entity. God doesn;t concern itself with our petty beliefs, behaviours, and foibles. I don't believe in the Biblical Heaven and Hell; but I'm not quite sure what's gonna happen to me when I die. For lack of better terms, call me an Agnostic/Deist.

Things evolved, the evidence is there. They're evolving now. But evolution doesn't explain ultimate origins, like what caused the Big Bang, or where the Matter/energy for it came from. Perhaps the Universe always existed, and so it doesn't need a creator. So I lean towards not believing in the God of any organized religion; but I also have to really wonder how Hydrogen atoms, given perhaps 15 billion years of cosmis evolution, assembled themselves into humans that can do something like paint the Cistine [sp?] Chapel. As to the Bible; I believe its a mix of truth, stories, facts, allegory and myth. Was Jesus a person? Probably. Did he come to earth to die for our sins, then ascend to heaven? I'd say no.

I'm often accused of fence-sitting and copping out with this stance. Guilty as Charged. But I have enough knowledge to realize how little I really know about these things, and with hope, I will learn a bit more every day.

Again, so much more to write on this; but I'll leave it at this unless anyone has more specific questions. The questions you ask above are so compelling that libraries are filled with books dealing with them. They are indeed some of the Ultimate Questions.

Will Jet-Packs be available in the future..

A: They're available now, if you have the cash! But if you think the traffic around NYC is bad now, imagine the added problem of Jet-Packers! And Flying While Intoxicated? NOOOO!!!!

What I want to know is, when I was a kid, we all were told that by the year 2000 we'd all have flying cars, robot maids, hotels in space, no hunger, no war: you know, the whole Jetsons/2001: A Space Odyssey/Utopia/AI thing.

Wheres my Stuff???

Mike,
How do you feel about peoples feet shrinking more rapidly in last 100 years do to progressively tighter footwear? What do you predict will be the future of the human foot will be?
Is this a good or bad thing, and why

Mike, How do you feel about peoples feet shrinking more rapidly in last 100 years do to progressively tighter footwear? What do you predict will be the future of the human foot will be? Is this a good or bad thing, and why A: Well; the vast majority of females on the planet dont wear tight footwear, so if indeed feet are shrinking for some, it would be localized to societies that participated in this; like the practice of binding feet in some asain countries.

A: It Would Chuck as Much Wood as A Woodchuck Could, IF a Woodchuck Could Chuck Wood!!

PS: And I don't know why it's called what it is, considering it's neither Wood, or a Chuck [unless thats it's name].

BTW, in your explanation of time travel you were refering of course to relativistic speeds.

I believe the question was intended as time travel from an absolute constant speed relative to other bodies at the same speed.

Current theory is that we can not travel into our own past or future but rather into the past or future of parallel dimensions. This is one of the popular ways dealing with the numerous time travel paradoxes.

We've already achieved future time travel w/a Russian satellite orbitting the equator. The earths rotation gives it an extra boost. Time on the satellite is measurably a few thousandths of a second faster than time on earth.

Relativistic time travel has come under new scrutiny lately with the postulation of tachyons (particles that travel ONLY above light speed.) It has been shown in the lab that light is not as constant as general relativity theory lead us to believe. Light has been sucessfully slowed down from it's "natural" speed of 186,000 miles per second to about 35 MPH. (The technique involved plasma, lasers, and resulted in a current debate about wheather to add plasma as a fourth form of matter (along with liquid solid and gas).

What can I say MIKE. I have many interests and eclectic tastes.

Mike,
A marriage is a legal contract. When one of the two parties joined by this contract (be it husband or wife) proceed to break the vows, why is the contract not considered void therefor not entitling the one that broke the contract to any marital property.

Please explain in great detail.

Wow; Horde King on the Thread! Holy, Sir!

Of course I was talking relativistic speeds aka reallllly reallllllly fast. And yes, the whole foundation of physics is again being shaken. We've slowed light down to almost nothing.

There's also currently evidence and a debate on whether the speed of light might evolve over time. Add THAT to the evidence that some of the most distant ojects we are now observing seem to be accelerating, as opposed to slowing down in most current cosmology theories, and we may have a whole new ball game.

Of course, it's happened before. Newtonian Mechanics did [and still does] just fine; then Albert et al. and showed us that the only absolute was the speed of light. Until now, it seems.

Also, with more powerful particle accelerators, new particles just keep flying out of those nuclei. There was actually a time, soon after the proton, neutron, and electron were discovered to be the building blocks of matter, that some thought Science might well come to an end, that we would have it all figured out, an "Equation of Everything" if you will. But as an expert, King, I'm sure you would agree how little we really know about things, especially on how the brain works. The A+P of the brain are well known, but how that 'enchanted loom' of neurons can do math, and make music, and debate on websites is, for me, still a total mystery.

Thanks for gracing the thread!

A: What i must explain in great detail is how woefully naive I am on most legal matters. So I cheated on this one and did some web searching. But here is my take...

If the marriage contract, or a contract, is broken by a party, it doesn't necesarily void the contract. When it is broken, a party must petition the court for a dissolution of the contract; meaning, lets say, someone cheated, while it may seem that the marriage is over, it isn't over, in a legal sense, until the formal dissolution of the contract, in a court, of law by a judge.

Now what i just described is, I'm pretty sure a common law divorce. Some states have No-Fault divorces, where no unsavory and/or illegal action has to take place; the parties simply agree to dissolve the contract on the grounds that the relationship is no longer viable.

So that's the divorce part part of divorce. The Property part of the divorce varies from state to state. Here's where I cheated and looked up those laws:

"Mississippi is the lone state that bases property division in divorce on who holds legal title. If the property is jointly held, it gets equitably divided.

Arizona, California, Idaho, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Washington, and Wisconsin are community property states. In general, this means that property either spouse owned before marriage and the income it has produced are separate property. So are separate gifts, inheritance, property accumulated after separation. Property accumulated during marriage is to be split equally.

All other states (including the District of Columbia) use some form of equitable distribution, meaning the property division should be fair, and it should be equitable, but it's not necessarily equal."

So, to me, it seems that the breaking of the marriage contract may have little to do with the property part of the marriage. So breaking the vows doesn't in and of it self mean you forfeit the property in the marriage, thats a seperate issue, it seems, in the eyes of the law.

I give myself an F+ on this one.

A: I think this assumes that these items actually exist. I believe they may be mythological, and therefore, they are stored in our minds. Or, maybe Monty Python's Holy Grail and Raiders of the Lost Ark are fact, and if you rent those you can get the story.
