When MTV started to launch program that weren't directly associated to music (i.e. Remote Control, Beavis and Butthead, Chillin with the Weez, etc.), the two that stayed in my mind were a revolution in amination Liquid Television and a dark humor based sketch show: The State. I would like to hear your memories of these shows and which one you think was better. Remember, this will be based on opinion so behave!

I liked The State A LOT more, but Liquid Television was the shit. I remember Aeon Flux started there. I think that stupid cartoon with the guy with the Huge head with an alien in it started there too. He got really mad, and his head split, and the alien came out and kicked ass. I remember Dog Boy, and I don't really have fond memories of it. I remember the first Beavis and Buttheads on there.
But The State was the best! I WANNA DIP MY BALLS IN IT!!

The State was the best sketch comedy show besides Mr. Show!!I just bought all the episodes from ebay and it was well worth it! If you loved the show and cant get the tapes than I suggest you rent the movie "Wet Hot American Summer". It has most of the cast of the state and was written by them. I dont remember Liquid Television much except for that Aeon Flux which was awful. It did spawn Beavis and Butthead so i guess it was alright. later

"The State" was hysterical. The only bad part about it was those twin brothers, who recently hosted "Battlebots." Those guys were a little annoying.

pinkyfloyd, what in the hell are you talking about? There weren't any twin brothers on the State.... or do I not get the joke?
I don't know how you could ask which of these shows was better, anyway. It's like comparing apples and oranges. Now, if you want to compare 'Liquid Television' to its spin-off, 'Beavis and Butt-head', THAT's a thread. :)

The State was the best show on television... and I wish I had taped the shows... as it stands I will probably never see them again.

Those two brothers were not on the state at all. they are the Sklar brothers and are some of the most unfunny people ive ever seen. I saw them do stand up on comedy central and it was the worst, they do the same material and its all very lame. I would even go as far to say that Billy Staples has better material. thank god those fruits werent on the state. If you want to see the state again get the tapes on ebay. They arent the best quality and its kinda expensive, but im pretty sure its the only way to see it again. They also came out with a book that is hysterical, its called "State by State with the State". Its great for bathroom reading!

THE STATE WAS GREAT!!! I've been telling people that never saw it how I wished there was a way to get copies of those shows. Thanks, scutzgannon, for giving me hope of finding them....I'm going to eBay right now to look for them.

Viva Variety was the show, but it was on Comedy Central, and I thought I was the only one in the country who watched it.
Michael Ian Black, I think is the guy's name. He's been on every 'I love the 80's' and 'I love the 80's strikes back' that was ever made, I think. And I think he has an improv troupe that tours (came to Baltimore last year) and is on Ed like you mentioned.

The State is probably my favorite show that was on television ever. So funny all the time, so short lived. Liquid Television was good, but paled in comparision.
"I LOOK LIKE A FUCKING BLUEBERRY!"
Michael Showalter (the guy who played Doug) I thought was among the funnier cast members and never really went on to do anything after the show. I have often seen the "entire state epsiode collection" on ebay, but didn't know how good it was. Its def. something I'm considering purchasing.

I signed an online petition for MTV to release the State on DVD. That was quite a while ago. I think all the success of moderatly popular TV series with very popular DVDs (read: family guy) is going to help if they ever are going to release them on DVD.

The State is coming out on DVD. It was announced about this time last year, but according to the official website, they're just now getiing through the red tape.

STATE DVD *UPDATE* APRIL 14, 2004
Finally, at long last, the members of The State are working in conjunction with MTV Home Video to make the ultimate, REAL, DVD collection of The State. We going back to the original master tapes and loading it with great extras too, including commentary, interviews, unaired material, etc. Save your money! Stop buying bootlegs! We don't know when exactly this new DVD will be released, but the second we do we'll post here and on our mailing list. (Sign up to the left) *update 4/14/04: it looks like we've finally broken through 95% of the red tape on The State DVD. Deals are being closed as we speak and we hope to have a release date for you soon.
