View Full Version : What Was The Coolest Thing You Ever Got In A Cereal Box?
The Blowhard

Back in the 60's, I remember one cereal(maybe Rice Krsipies) had an actual 45 record on the side of the box. You just cut it out and you had a hit single. I remember getting The Supremes "Baby Love" and the Temps "Papa Was A Rolling Stone".
I also remember some real cheesy crap, like dart guns, whistles and other things which made you stick your hand into the box and dig deep, feeling around for a prize.(sounds dirty!)

My son has been buying the Oreo cereal just so we can get the cool little bobble head baseball players. We already have 4. A-Rod,Sosa,Chipper,and Luis Gonzalez.

I don't remember what I got,but I do remember technique.
1) Open box top(carefully, you may need to save it for the next promo).
2)Pull open wax paper bag holding cereal.
3)Squeeze outside of cardboard box with wide part of opening in horizontal position. (This will create a larger opening allowing your little grimey mitts room to grap prize).
4)While holding box with one hand and braced against your arm pit, reach in with other hand and immediately go for the bottom of the box(more accurately 1" from the bottom).
5)Let out a big sigh of disgust/disappointment after pulling out prize.

I remember when the prize was the determining factor as to what cereal you would beg Mom to buy. They all looked so cool, but usually turned out to be a piece of crap. You were thrilled with it nonetheless.
Today, you have to save UPC labels and send away for everything. These kids are being robbed of a valuable part of their childhood.
The coolest thing I remember getting was this plastic pipe inside a box of Quisp. It came with a little plastic replica of the moon, and when you blew through it, the moon would float. A cheesy little magnifying glass attached between the mouthpiece and the end so the moon would appear larger.
It sucked, but I'd kill to have that thing today.

I dunno, when I was a kid I'd save some sort of coupons from Cheerios in order to send away for some Lone Ranger thingy. It never came... I was hearbroken. Why'd you do it Lone Ranger.. WHY?!?

I think there was a special edition GI Joe figure in one of the boxes I bought.
I also liked when they would have those cheesey tattoos you could put on with warm water.

A Adams FAmily Flash Light.
I just got a box of Cheerios that had a full version DVD of The Muppets take Manhattan. A whole DVD? What in the blue hell justifies putting a 15 dollar DVD in a $4 box of cereal.
My favorites as a kid were the Alka Seltzer Submarine in Capt. Crunch. But at the start of the year General Mills had Light Sabre pens.

A dog's chew-toy. Maybe not cool but odd for a cereal box.
Your bark was loud, but your bite wasn't vicious

I remember getting Cap'n Crunch Crunch Berries because they had a $1000 Toys'R'Us shopping spree inside. I was so fucking sure I was gonna win. It was sealed deal. Imagine my dismay when I got nothing, but shitty cereal.

BJ, you still got the Crunch Berries and there is no shame in that.
I got a vinyl record in my box of Ghostbuster cereal. It was about 10 minutes long, but it was still pretty cool.

Those flexible 45's were really cool. But, my favorite was the little submarine you filled up with baking soda and watched surface and sink again... Hours of enjoyment.

When ever a cearal came out with a new marshmellow, or flavor they would cheese you out on the toy. You would always get some stupid game on the back of the box promoting the new flavor, how boring!
