Metro Sets Off Aug. 20 on 'City Hall to Ground Zero 9-11Memorial Run'

From scores of Metro officers who competed for the honor, an elite 20 of the division's finest will be selected to take part in the "City Hall to Ground Zero 9-11 Memorial Run" to honor the victims of last year's terrorist strikes on New York and Washington DC.

Those runners (being chosen in time-trials that took place after our deadline for this article) will leave Los Angeles City Hall at 0900 on Tuesday, August 20, in a 2,900-mile cross-country run. Their goal: arrival at Ground Zero in Manhattan, where the World Trade Center once stood, on the morning of September 11 - the one year anniversary of the tragedies. Department members and the general public are invited to give the team a rousing send-off from the Main Street steps of City Hall.

Every officer participating in the event and those providing support are using their own vacation and personal times to compete in the race. They will pass through hundreds of communities as they make their way through California, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New Jersey and New York. Support personnel will trail runners in a motor home and an "official" LAPD black and white will serve as follow vehicle.

Along the way (and here in Los Angeles) officers will ask Americans to contribute to the September 11 National Memorial Fund, seeking to raise funds needed to build a fitting tribute to the over 2,900 people who lost their lives at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. "Our hope is to help bring closure to the families of the victims," said Officer Ron Daniels, who helping coordinate the run. "Although we'll be just a small part of the ceremonies at Ground Zero on the 11th we want to serve as a catalyst to get people across the country involved in making this memorial happen."

While the initial course does not include the Pentagon in Arlington, VA, Daniels is hopeful it will not be left out. "We'll try and pick up the pace in the earlier stages of the run," he said. "If we can get 15-20 hours ahead of schedule by time we reach Ohio, then we will detour south to the Pentagon before heading to Manhattan."

With six weeks until the start (at our deadline) the Eagle and Badge Foundation, Protective League, Universal Studios, and Asicx apparel have already stepped up to the plate as major sponsors of the Metro effort. However, coordinating logistics for the run, and funding expenses, is a staggering event. "We are still actively looking for donations and sponsors for the Metro team," said Daniels. "By race date we hope more major sponsors will have stepped forth. With the support of the LAPD community I know we will make it happen." All funds raised in excess of actual expenses will be channeled to the Memorial Fund.

Tax-exempt donations to support the run (payable to "LA SWAT Foundation") can be mailed to 9-11 Memorial Run, c/o Metropolitan Division, 251 E.6th Street, Los Angeles CA 90014. For more information and sponsorship information contact Mike Albanese, John Incontro, Scott DeFoe or Ron Daniels at (213) 485-4091.

That's a great, really creative thing to do. Best of luck to them!

"Sure, radio had a simple dignity. But people wanted to see the grieving families. And, as usual, technology refused to be dignity's bitch."

Oh, by the way, which one's pinky?
