View Full Version : Blumberg's Latest Insane Ban
I dont have any newspaper article, but you guys are quick around here so, I'm sure someone can fill in the missing details.
NYC's Mayor Blumberg is now trying to ban walking down the street talking on a cell phone. He claims its an annoyance becasue these people "bump into others".
Hello!?!?! Did you ever walk down a manhattan street BEFORE cellphones were so big? ITs the same damn thing.
I think his next move as mayor is to have us all goosestep through town and shout Seig Heil. WTF!

So your ideal world would be where everyone chain-smokes while endlessly chattering on cell-phones? (it's Bloomberg, by the way)
Must...build...the...pyramid.
No, that would not be my ideal world, but honestly it seems that Blumberg is starting to infringe on many New Yorkers (and visitors) civil rights.
Personally, I think the ACLU are a bunch of whiney babies who are eventually going to screw everyone over with their crusade for equality and political correctness. Similarly, I do not support it, but I understand where the attempt to ban cigarette smoking in a bar comes from.
I just dont understand why its such a big deal about the cellphone thing. Mind you, I am not one of those people who are on the phone 24/7, but I do use the phone, and last time I checked it wasn't only people on cell phones bumping into others in pededstrian traffic. If you want to take these phones out of movie & broadway theatres, go ahead, do me the favor, some people don't have the decency to silence them or ignore a call and that IS a nuissance, but while walking down a public street? That to me is extreme.
It just seems like more political bullshit to me. He's trying to generate funds through ticketing every last penny out of New Yorkers and visitors & commuters alike so he can get himself out of trouble and get the city back on track, financially. Its going to end up costing him MORE money to put MORE police out there to find & ticket these violators than necessary. Similarly, I feel the NYPD has much more important things to worry about.
Thats just my two cents, though.

What is he gonna do next? Tax the air we breathe, filthy as it is?
Bloomberg do something better with New York's time and money than waste it on this vitually fruitless endeavor!

Are they going to post this on every street corner? If not, it's not enforcable - how do you ticket someone from out of town who had no idea this law existed - it stinks and I dont like it

I said this in the thread about the ban on smoking in bars, but I will re-state it here: Electing Mayor Bloomberg was a BIG F'n mistake. Next election I'm voting for a chain smoking, whiskey swilling, cell phone gabbing asshole who recycles like a mofo.

And i thought Rudy was bad in banning pr0n shops.
This almost worse than Ashcroft tyring to arrest people for sharing mp3s via Kazza.
This world has gone to hell in a handbasket.
Bloomberg is the worst mayor EVAR!

Too much government involvement in everyday life will be our downfall. Cell phones are hated almost as much as cigarettes now. This is getting ridiculous. I'd still do it. What does ChristheCop think of enforcing a dumb ass law like this. I think law enforcement has a little bit more to do in NYC than give you tickets for talking on your phone. Where are we going to be able to talk on them? At home? Where's the logic in this?

Okay, I can see how not wanting the smoking ban could seem selfish, but how on Earth is not wanting the cell phone ban selfish?

I bring it down to common courtesy, Gwen. I have never seen so many people argue for the right to be rude.

Gwen, I'm in the government too, who are you with?
Philby: I see your point, but consider some of the people with legitimate reasons to carry cellphones and perhaps carry on a conversation in public.
What about the soon to be father recieving the phone call that his wife has just gone into labor and he's on the phone trying to keep her calm until he can get to her?
Similarly, people in a medical or business emergency who are enroute to the location of the emergency and must maintain communication?
What about the man or woman who just got mugged or assaulted and needs to call for help?
These situations do not alwasy occur conveniently near a payphone or patrolling officer.
I agree, cellphones in public places like restaurants, theatres and shows can be a nuissance, and that is one of my pet peeves, but many people carry their cellphones in case of emergency, rather than to just be a plain old "Gabby Gary".

who's courtesy? you find smoking offensive. i do not. so therefore i have to listen to what you think? makes no sense.
i don't smoke (cigarettes anyway), and i don't promote smoking. but what i think should not be forced on others just because it's my opinion.
to much stuff is changed just because people get offended. i can't watch rated R programming because of some other person's child? fuck that, let them raise their kids and leave me filthy programming. i dont' need other people deciding what i do, let alone the government.
why shouldnt' an establishment be allowed to allow smoking if they want? should the government tell me i can't smoke in my house? there's no difference really, if people don't like the smoke they dont' have to go in, but the government is deciding it for everyone.
i get pissed at people using the cell phones sometimes, but fuck it we're in america. why don't they ban assholes who can't drive before they worry about people with cellphones walking around. how about banning the construction on a main street during rush hour? that inconviences me and i'm offended but they keep doing it.
the government is trying to decide everything for us and it shouldn't be allowed. enough already.

First he taxes cigarettes to increase revenue and then he wants to ban smoking????? Now he's harping on cell phones??? Sounds like diversionary tactics to distract our attention from something.

Look, the ACLU picks a LOT of stupid cases to represent, too many, actually, BUT, they have picked far more that are esential and important issues in terms of our individual rights as Americans, ALL of us...it's just too bad that the majority of those AREN'T picked up by the media...
As stupid as some of the issues they get behind, I'd feel worse if an organization like theirs DIDN'T exist...someone's gotta be watching the watchmen...

forget the cellphones, do something about the assholes on bikes. They don't obey any traffic laws and ride like dipshits. One asshole tried to fit between a cab and a barrier where I was already walking today, and the dick barely slowed down and knocked my cell phone off my belt.

I love u Aggie. U always care what i think. Naturally, if it becomes law, I'll "enforce" it. But I dont think it will come to that. It's ridiculous. Dont forget its also illegal to spit, litter, jaywalk, ride a bike on a sidewalk, turn without signalling, or go over 30mph or uturn on a city street. Some summonses are written more often than others.
