My first car was a 73 Olds Cutlass 2 door with bucket seats. I loved that car(until this drunk bitch hit me head on 12/24/83.)
Must...build...the...pyramid.
How about the greatest of all car makers...AMC? The Gremlin, the Pacer, and the Hornet. They also owned Jeep until they sold it off to Chrysler.
Those cars had personality, unlike the cookie-cutter models of today.

My Mom had a Hornet years ago. I remember that when you turned the car on you could take the key out of the ignition.

Dude ! I had a 76 Hornet that you could do this on too. Must have been crappy ignition locks, like everything else on the car. Mine was about 1/2 bondo...

Two of the cars my brother managed to total (he cried both times)...
http://cll.hemmings.com/uimage/554451-300-0.jpg?rev=1
and a Chevy Nova II. His was one of the fastest cars in town. He had it for 6 days. His air shocks were too powerful... hit a bump in the road and rolled it about 3 times. To make matters worse, while it sat in our driveway, someone stole all the custom engine parts.
http://www.altonmotorsports.com/images/2006%20Feb/Nova%20II%20003_lg.jpg
BTW... that's not his actual car, but his Buick was the same color as the one in pic at the top.

It's certianly more interesting then sports talk and I'm glad I don't have to here any of them spouting bullshit about their stupid hometeams, but I still don't get it.

my first car was and still is, because I still own it ,is a 1947 ford pickup. It sat in the woods on a farm in PA. for 20yrs till I got my hands on it and started to restore it. I bought the truck when I was 16 with money I saved from my two paper routes. Before that I only worked on minibikes. If you want to see it, rent the movie Sophie,s Choice. I was asked by the production company to turn it into an ice cream truck and did it . THE scene where Sophie hears bells jingling and looks out a window and sees my truck. It also is in the movie POLOCK with Ed Harris. Its the truck that almost hits polock as he rides a bike with a case of beer, which he drops. HAHAHAHA

Easily, toyotas are unstoppable, my '83 corolla had 90,000 on it when I got it as my first car, I beat the shit out of it for another 30,000, never let me down. My family has had 5 totyotas, all great cars. Anyway just to inject some European flair into this thread...

Old cars I had would include 3 Chevy Vegas.
When I was married, we decided to sell one and while at work, my wife took care of it. The chap showed up, started the thing and paid her, oh, I think it was about 3 or 400 bucks for the car. Paperwork completed, he got in to drive it off, started it up and it blew up, right there.
She began to bitch at him for parking that piece of shit in front of our house and ordered him to have it removed immediately and when the towtruck hauled it off, she gave him $100 back.
I had a green '72 Dodge Dart that was a great work car. I loved the way you opened the hood and all you saw was engine, and none-a this spaghetti one sees now, plus plenty of room to work.
I had me a '74 and '76 Mustang. The '76 was that silver color that faded immediately after purchase, but its bucket seats were the most comfortable I have had in a car.
With the '76, I had a hot date and went by my parents house for something. They lived at the top of a long hill and I forgot to put the car in gear when I parked. I remembered when I got to the door, turned around to see it begin to roll backwards. I chased it down the hill as cars going each way dodged the thing. It went off the road and hit a tree dead center of the rear license plate. This put a v-shaped dent in the rear, about 2 feet deep. On impact, the locking gas cap popped off like a champagne cork and sailed across the street.
I had an old Toyota Corona, I think made in '72, that I drove the hell out of.
Then there was my '71 Delta Custom with the 455 and 4-barrel. That baby was a lot of fun to drive on the highway and big enough in the back to screw. I got caught once by the cops back there, corpus indelecto...

My first car was a 1974 Volvo 144. I wish I had it now simply because I have not seen more than three others on the road in the 13 years since I owned it. It was a terrible car for electrical problems and its insatiable need for obsolete parts, but what a fun time nonetheless.
I've had two or three brand new cars but the best I ever did for myself was a 1990 Cadillac Brougham. This was the last run of big long Cadillacs with chrome grilles and long taillights. I bought it from a grandfather who had only put 80,000 pampered highway miles on it in nine years. I drove it two years and sold it for a profit. I cried like a baby when it was gone.

i cant believe no one has said they had a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle Super Sport.
I had one, it was a restoration project that halted due to lack of money and my mom bought it for 1800 bucks when the guy needed a lawyer to get him out of jail for marijuana charge. it was Jade Metallic Green with Cragar Centerline wheels on it.
I had it till it was 19...so 4 years......had a .30 over 350 with Eagle Rods, Keith Black lightweight pistons, .461 World Product heads, roller rocker arms with a roller cam and aluminum Edelbrock highrise intake with a 750 double pumper Barry Grant Demon carb on it. Oh, and I forgot a Comp 9000 MSD distributor with all MSD stuff to go with it.
lets just say, it was a replica of my dirt track racecar engine put in my chevelle....and I was 16 years old......
all i had to say was, bring it on...

My first car officially was a green and white 4-door feefty-seex Chebby.
Got it for $200, it needed everything!
My parents were out and I thought my dad was gonna shit when they got home as the towtruck unhooked that rascal in the driveway.
I had big dreams of getting the engine rebuilt getting her painted and upholstered and to get that old mud smell out and it was so cool with the giant steering wheel and about two feet of headroom. I was gonna custom install a hookah inside the backseat...
Oh yeah, I had dreams all right.
I remember that first night owning it, just looking under the hood at I-didn't-know-what and then figuring it probably needed oil and I forgot to check the dipstick. I just figured you filled it up to the top of the cap.
Then I couldn't find where the gas went in.
I looked everywhere, but no gas cap in sight.
I thought my brainstorm of looking behind the license plate would hit paydirt and I was wrong.
So I went in and asked my still-stunned father who was contemplating that heap o'shit outside, sitting next to my mother who was real quiet, but I know she'd been working on him.
I asked him to step outside and a slight wry grin came over his face when I mentioned the gas cap.
He strode up to the rear fender where the vertical tail light assembly was and grabbed a chunk of ornamental chrome and gave it a twist.
OILA!
The whole fuckin assembly leaned back to reveal the gas cap.
"How did you know where it was?" I asked.
"I used to have one of these myself," he replied, and for a minute it was one of those golden moment you wish would never end.
I bullshitted around and moved out and my rent was so high I couldn't do anything with the car - I lived about a five-minute walk from work and I was stoned all the time anyways. A year later I sold the thing and got my $200 back and my parents got their 1-car garage back.
That was decades ago and my father is not so spry any more and I would give anything to have that moment back again.
I'm much older now and it's a whole different world and instead of fighting with my parents we are great friends and we have golden times of a different sort now and I visit every chance I get, unlike back then when I just wanted to get the hell away from them.

I've gotta laugh reading some of these posts. A '67 Coronet 4-door with a 318 won't even get through the door at Barrett-Jackson (I'm sure Arch knows that. He seems to know his Mopars. Good!) and no Mustang was ever the same as an Escort. Escorts were designed in Germany and had front-wheel-drive. All Mustangs, even the Pinto-derived Mustang II, were rear-wheel-drive and U.S.-designed. That means you can swap a V8 into any decent Mustang (not so with an Escort) and build something out of it so none of them should ever be counted out!
I still have my first car, a 1977 Pontiac Firebird Esprit. It has been disassembled for more years than I'd like to acknowledge and is currently causing me to flush money down the toilet on a monthly basis because, despite my total lack of garage space, I refuse to part with it.
I had a rust-free body shell shipped up from Texas several years ago and acquired a 400/TH 400 combo a few years back. My storage unit resembles a model kit box like you'd find at a garage sale where someone started putting some of the pieces together, lost some other pieces and threw some extra pieces in from other kits. Someday, if the town will let us, we'll build a nice 2.5-car detached garage and I'll get to work putting it together.
I also had a rusty, faded 1977 Buick Lesabre 4-door known as "the Beast" that had an Olds 350 4bbl (original engine) and a stolen stop sign replacing the driver's floorboard, a fairly clean 1978 Olds Delta 88 4-door that I bought non-running for about $50 and put a used $200 Olds 350 4bbl/TH350 into (my first engine replacement) and a 1992 Chevy Cavalier. I firmly believe that all Cavaliers should be destroyed to save the world from the Cavalier plight. I wish I'd kept the Olds.
One of these days maybe I'll finally my dream car, a 1968 Charger R/T with a Hemi. It doesn't have to be a real R/T with a numbers-matching Hemi but a nice, clean Charger I can drop a crate Hemi into and make into an R/T clone would be cool. Despite the string of GMs, I'm really a Mopar guy. Go figure.
