View Full Version : Calling all New Yorkers

I know I'm going to regret asking, cuz I can already imagine Pootertoot's reply, but I've only lived here in NYC for a little over a year, so any and all info would be helpful, even Pootertoot's... I guess.
For my little brother's h.s. graduation, my honey and I gave him a trip to NY, to come visit us (June 29 - July 5). We've been trying to come up with interesting things for him to do while he's here. He does want to see a few things specifically... the Statue of Liberty and the U.N (he's a weird kid). My honey and I also plan to take him to a Yankee's game (though that might be more for us than him actually. :) ) We don't want to take him to the really touristy places, but we do want to take him to fun and interesting spots. Now my honey is a New Yorker to the core, born and raised here... but he's just one guy, and I simply don't have enough area knowledge.
Sooooo... any suggestions, folks? Where should I take this 17 year old when he comes to visit?

To start, you could simply take him to a really nice movie theatre in Manhattan. Since he's in HS, he'd probably want to go.

you should take him to burritoville (2nd ave between st.marks and 9th). they have the best burritos. some of the food on their menu is vegan so i guess it would be a different experience for him. some of the food might be a little costly though, but it is so worth it.
you should also check out angelica's kitchen (12 st. between 1st and 2nd ave.). most of their food is organic and all of their food is vegan. pretty expensive (but i'm cheap and poor so most things are expensive to me) really good food.
what kind of music is he interested in? he might want to check out the elbow room. they play live music there and it is all free, unless you want something from the bar. he might need an id (i mean fake id. hmm, not like i actually have one).
you should walk around st.marks. make fun of all the crusty punks.

I see my reputation precedes me. This could be detrimental to my work....
Since it's the boy's first time in NY, I'll be nice and tame. Bring him by the train station and I'll sodomize him over a bathroom sink. After I make him paint my naked, unwashed body with tribal markings using his anal blood, we'll share a meal of some flat, furry thing I scraped off the tracks. I'll dance for him, slapping him a few times with my sweaty, greasy weasel until he cries. Then we'll hit the streets and I'll show him all the fun you can have with a small dog, a pair of pliers, a car battery, and some jumper cables. Then we'll throw the fried pieces of the carcass from an overpass or into open windows and call it a night. Take it easy on the boy.
Of course, I'll know where he's staying after I walk him home, so if he wakes up with mud on his face and the taste of old pennies in his mouth, you can't blame me.

So basically a normal day for you, huh, Poot? ;) I do appreciate the offer... I'll run it by him and see if he's interested. How's that?
I'm not sure if he's up for your kind of tour, Skullcrush, but I don't plan on candycoating anything for him either. I do want him to get the wonderful sights and sounds of the city. Not to mention the smells... vomit, urine, feces...
Thanks, GG. I did want to have him experience some new foods, but I hadn't thought of vegitarian. But if I'm going to get him to eat it, I'd have to lie to him. My family is from Wisconsin... they think it's strange that my primary meat source is chicken not beef. I'm not even sure the kid will eat vegetables unless there's meat sitting next to it... but I do intend to try and broaden his horizons. :) Burritoville is a great suggestion... he might just try something without meat if it's somewhat familiar.
Thanks for the idea, Vegeta. I'll have to see if there's anything he particularly wants to see right now. He's an indecisive young man, and I'm never sure what he wants to see because just when I think I have it figured out... he likes something else.
Thank you so much, Heckler... those are definitely some good ideas. I particularly like the Circle Line suggestion... I think that might go on the list. I did think about Coney Island, particularly for Nathans (y'know, NY is the only place that fries hot dogs, doncha? noplace else does that) but when I suggested it to my honey, he was concerned about the number of people who might be wandering around the beaches... since it is going to be the week of the 4th. I also like the Bronx Zoo idea... I wonder if I can drag him there... I can never tell whether he'll like a zoo or not. For instance, he hates the Minnesota Zoo. But two miles away is the Como Zoo, much small, much cheaper, much cheesier, much dirtier... and he LIKES that one. Weird kid. The USS Intrepid Museum is a GREAT idea! He'll love that, my honey will love that, I'll enjoy it. And of course we're taking him on the subway... can't come to NYC and NOT ride the subway, now could he? That was extremely helpful... thank you. :)

kate, you should try taking him to the museum of the moving image and to ps 1 (contemporary art museum). these are two of my favorite places in new york...he might enjoy them.
also, the film forum and anthology film archives are great places to check out some great movies.
one last thing...the knitting factory is a great music venue...if you want to hear some new music.

Before you run off to see Ms. Germs' film exhibits, keep in mind she had never seen Pulp Fiction (and was seemingly unaware of its existence) until I made her a few weeks ago.
However, she does appreciate Christopher Walken in all his many forms, so you best listen to her.
Heckler's ideas were all great, but I *highly* recommend the Conan taping and the Blue Man Group, both worth it all the way...unfortunately, you'll be hard up to get Conan tickets on short notice, so it all depends on how much you love your brother...you traipse down to 30 Rock around 8 AM, they hand out standby tickets for that night's taping, which will most certainly get you in later on when they tape around 5. You're from Wisconsin, so getting up to be somewhere at 8 am might seem normal to you. I, however, have been known to kill and defecate on the mangled, lifeless body of anyone who dares wake me up before 9 am. So...good luck on that.

Adam Ferrara is performing at Carolines the weekend of June 29th. (I don't know if there is an age limit, but I don't think so)
That should be funny, but Pootertwat is offering sodomy... tough choice.

KATE - He might really enjoy some of the IMAX theaters.
And kids and adults of any age love the new Planitarium show at the NY Museum of Natural History. The museum is pretty cool too.
I would stay away from open sewer gratings with evil looking clowns smiling invitingly at unsuspecting touristy types.
